RE: Who who, who who, all thanks to Anita

Did not know she convinced the band to add the Who-Who-Woo-Woo to SFTD

Anita didn't really have to convince anybody on that, Mick loved the idea as soon as he heard it, but she could thank Jimmy Miller for giving her the idea in the first place.

I believe it was Marianne Faithfull who first told the story. She was in the booth with Jimmy and Anita when Mick was early on recording the vocals for the song, with the band still trying to decide on who was going to play what instruments on the tune. Jimmy was getting off on the lyrics as Mick was singing the song, and in the booth at first was singing some of them aloud and along with Mick as he was singing. He then stopped halfway through to listen to Mick sing and then started to say/sing half to himself, something along the lines of 'Oh yeah Mick, who are we talking about, who who, who who!'. He repeated "who, who" over and over several times after that, and Anita, not Jimmy, realized there was something to what Jimmy was chanting. Afterwards she went to Mick and told him how wonderful Jimmy sounded chanting that and maybe the Stones should add the chant to the song as backing vocals. Once they tried it, they loved how it sounded and kept it in there.

It was Jimmy's idea to have as many people sing the chant all at once. Anita, Jimmy, Marianne, Keith, Brian and Bill then were all recorded singing the chant together as Mick sang the lead into a second mic (Charlie was there too in the group standing around the mic, as Jimmy wanted him to sing too, but the film of this clearly shows that he never once opened his mouth to sing). They recorded this at least 2 different times, using both "who who" and "woo woo" to see what sounded better (seems that 'woo woo' won out), but only the first take showed up in the movie, SFTD, although the second take was also filmed and shown a year later, in a second doc which was released in a totally different, non Stones movie, which luckily I saw by accident. In the second take, Keith in that one is not singing, but he's shown just outside of the group playing his lead guitar riff. Jimmy also in that second take isn't in the group either (nor is Charlie), he's standing in front of the group, at first next to Keith, who is wandering around as he plays his guitar. But Jimmy is standing there facing the group, while also singing, and opening and closing his stretched out arms and hands to the chant as they sing, acting and looking like a conductor to an orchestra, as he was getting the group to sing in perfect harmony and sing the verse at the exact same time (the reason for the motion of his arms/hands). This second take was what they should have shown in the Stones movie, actually they should have shown both takes. From what I understand, there was at least a third take of this, that wasn't filmed or at east never shown.

(This I'm editing in 5 minutes later: after thinking it over, what i actually recall, Keith is not play the lead riff on guitar in the second take, but he is playing and laying down the bass guitar line instead. I say this now because I can recall seeing Keith playing non-stop, as the bass is, while his lead guitar riff is of course in bits and pieces. But I only ever saw this second take one time, in the early 1970s, so it's hard to totally recall)
