Fatmo, what you say is true for the most part. I might question how well people know the guys from Queen and The Who. Folks over 40 and over 50 certainly do. But if you talk to people aged 15-30 its stunning how little they know of rock/pop history. They know the biggest icons but they might not know the second level down, ie groups such as Queen, The Eagles, etc. Huge bands, but not on the level of the Beatles. That said, I think you are right that Floyd is probably up there with the Beatles and yet they do remain fairly anonymous. None of them really did anything truly major outside of the band. Yes, Waters and Gilmour made good music but not on the level of Paul McCartney. Wright and Mason made totally forgettable solo projects.
