That's it, I'm finally going to give jazz or jazz-related things a chance. I've always been bored by the limited stuff I've heard, but I've read just enough to know that I simply need to really give Coltrane and Duke Ellington(/Sinatra) a go. I need a couple other recommendations from you guys to round out a small cluster of exposure. I listen by album, not hits or compilations, so do I go with Miles Davis and Charles Mingus, or others? (I know the basics in terms of written acclaim and influence even if I haven't heard them with my own ears yet..) I will appreciate anything, including jazz-fusion suggestions, or whatever. I have always preferred a nice rhythm and/or groove in my music, and maybe that is why I like things like reggae and krautrock/motorik a lot but I'm willing to branch out in the interest of exploration.
And since I'm asking for suggestions, here are a couple of my own. I've been digging the hell out of this 1969 gem of an album, self-titled by the Puerto-Rican version of the band called "Kaleidoscope." (There were US and UK Kaleidoscopes as well). It could be called Latin Rock, but it draws heavily from acid blues, like Jefferson Airplane and other West-Coast bands from the 60s. Check out two songs on youtube:
