RE: RE: Double albums, Exile, and filler

Long Long Long!? That's in the 25% that isn't filler for sure! You know, I did technically forget to include Cream's "Wheels of Fire"---that one has at least 50% filler too, but when it comes to the Beatles it is not that I still have a grudge against them at all. I have been coming back around to them a lot lately after having had it out for them for a while. BUT...when it comes to the White Album I still can't help it, and neither could George Martin, by the way. He said it should have a been a single album too. To some extent my opinion is also due to the fact that since I consider the Beatles so great by most measurements I expect a lot more from them...more than most other bands save the Stones, and the White Album just doesn't compare to most of their other stuff. But it is also true that even all by itself, removed from context, a ton of the songs on there are just simply sub-par, goofy, incoherent, not held together at all in any unifying theme at all, and a hodgepodge of half-baked ideas. And mark my words, if any other band had released garbage like Revolution 9 or Why Don't We Do it in the Road or Ob-La-Di or Honey Pie or Bungalow Bill they would have been CRUSHED by both critics and fans. But since it was "The Beatles" they somehow have gotten away with it to some extent in the long view of history.

Now, that said, there are some amazing songs on the album, true classics (we all know which ones those are)...and some (like Savoy Truffle and Martha My Dear that I love even despite the fact that I should know better) and so I suppose I'd be willing to bump down the filler level to around 65% after a bit more consideration, but that's all!!
