You're right, not L.A. but maybe not UK either since most sources indicate it was written by the two in a hotel in Pittsburg no less, after said flight. Yes, Clark was indeed terrified of flying, being the "Bill Wyman" of the Byrds in that particular respect. But the salient point is correct - it was Clark and Jones' song as first written and then brought to the rest of the band. I'll give McGuinn his due as well for the spectacular 12-string solos that help define the recording as much as the theme. And Chris Hillman's bass riff intro ain't too shabby either. Interesting to note that Clark quit soon after the single was released and the Byrds never had another top 10 hit.
