There was a Rolling Stones-Byrds connection as well. The Stones were in L.A. quite often for recording dates and occasional live shows, and in his spare time Brian frequented the Sunset Strip quite a bit. While there he struck up a friendship with the Byrds' Gene Clark who at the time was the band's primary songwriter. The two were trading song ideas one night and came up with a first draft of "Eight Miles High". There is sound interview footage with Clark affirming this, and also saying that Brian didn't seem concerned about getting a credit for his efforts. The Byrds took it into the studio and tweaked it here and there, and at the end of the day it was a Clark-McGuinn-Crosby song. McGuinn for his 12-string pyrotechnics, and Crosby for composing one line of lyrics. But anyway, another account that seems to dismiss the notion that Brian Jones was "incapable" of writing songs.
