If there was a Mt. Rushmore for artists of the rock era, Dylan would certainly make the final cut. For one he changed the face of popular music by merging folk and rock. Folk music which had enjoyed a huge following, literally died for a time in the mid-late 60's but rock managed to electrify and soak it up in the process. Lyrically, Dylan is in a class of his own. He has reinvented himself over the years (protest singer, pop star, recluse then re-emerging, religious messenger, road warrior, among others), but at the end of the day it was always Dylan. And his often sullen persona went completely against the grain of how a pop star was supposed to act, which only added to his success.
