In early '64 the Dave Clark Five were the first British band to challenge The Beatles in the U.S., and while they had a lot of hits, their run was fairly short, a couple of years or so.
Their sound was unique from the Brit bands of the day, not guitar jangly like many of the Mersey or "Beat" groups, but more like a small orchestral wall of sound. Their keyboard player Dave Smith was also a fine rock vocalist, a polar opposite of, say, Peter "Herman" Noone if you will.
