RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Small Faces

Marriott gave the band an ultimatum of sorts in late '69. He wanted to bring in Peter Frampton from The Herd as a second guitarist to beef up their sound, presumably to move SF in a heavier direction. Ronnie and Mac both vetoed this proposal, and Marriott subsequently quit the band in a huff during a New Year's Eve gig on 12-31-68. Humble Pie formed quickly thereafter. HP's first 2 albums recorded in '69 ("As Safe As Yesterday Is" and "Town & Country") were actually more laid back than the Pie's later albums, mixing rockers with softer acoustic songs. I find them both listenable enough with a few exceptional songs included, but nowhere close to the '68 masterpiece "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake", recorded at a time when ALO was their manager. Yeah, Marriott was none too happy that a novelty song like "Lazy Sunday", great as it was, ended up being the big hit from that album. So the cracks had emerged even at a point where the band was enjoying its biggest commercial success.
