Small Faces and Faces were definitely two different bands.
No, they definitely weren't! Only one member left and it took 2 to replace him, but the core of the band was still there. That would be like saying that when Brian left the Stones that the Stones became a new band. Now sometimes when one single person leaves, it does change the band some, yet sometimes, it makes no difference at all. Rod Stewart sang a lot different than Steve Marriott, so that made them sound a lot different, but changing a lead singer don't mean a new band unless you get rid of more than half of the members. In this case for this band, just one person left. Think of the countless bands that happened to and were still the same band after, no difference here. Well, the only difference was that Stewart, who always had a giant head/ego, would say they were a new band when he took over, but they were still the Small Faces minus Marriott and the word "Small" in their name, which they dropped since all the members were not small in size anymore.
I went with Ronnie Lane for the band's most underrated player, he had to be one of the most underrated bassists in rock music and his song writing was underrated, too. He spent his last years living not too far from where I live; living on the other side of the mountains from here, in the same area that drummer Ginger Baker lived in around the same time, that is, for most of the 1990s.
