To my shame I hadn't heard of Leon Russell before
No shame, just some great missed music I would say if you didn't know him, although it sounds like you actually know a bunch of what he played on. His cover of JJF is excellent indeed, as good as anybody ever covered the Stones, but I went with his cover of "Young Blood" for my pick, and there were several other ones listed that are just as good, and his piano on "Get A Line On You" is outstanding, better than what Preston played in his absence on "Shine a Light". Check out these 2 videos from the The Concert For Bangladesh, the first one is very poor film quality, but it's the music you want to hear: Jumping Jack Flash, but it's also cut off when he goes from JJF into an even better performance of "Young Blood", but this next link picks it up right where the other one ends: Young Blood/JJF close. I suggest you view the entire movie when you get a chance, that was one of the best concerts ever put on by anybody, and so many stars shined that night and played for a good cause which still helps hungry people today.
Leon played my home town several years ago, what a great show he put on, and I was standing directly in front of him for the entire concert. He just passed away a few months ago, so RIP Leon.
