It is quite possible that Keith's playing is on the decline. There was a report a couple of years ago talking about arthritis or swelling in hands or something, and also failing memory where he can't recall lyrics. But then he will go and sing something pretty much perfectly, like You Got The Silver.
Its a wonderful romantic idea that they just get better with age, but people do just that - they age. Still, with age, something special and intangible is imparted within the music. Sinatra and Elle Fitzgerald had this quality late in their careers, and I think in some way the Stones do too.
