I really did hear a slight connection, and perhaps it was because I played them back to back after buying both on vinyl yesterday. (I have had each on CD for a very long time). And yes, it's an entire album, but there is a 4 note bass line that rings throughout. And you hear it when Coltrane chants "A Love Supreme...A Love Supreme...".
I just Googled both recordings and I am not alone thankfully :). This from a well written review of Steel Wheels from the New York Times :
"Yet while most of ''Steel Wheels'' will fit right in to the most timid classic-rock radio formats, the Stones also throw one curve ball - ''Continental Drift.'' It opens with nasal Moroccan pipes (played by the Master Musicians of Jajouka) and moves into a circular, Arabic-sounding riff akin to John Coltrane's ''Love Supreme,'' and after lyrics like ''love comes at the speed of light'' and ''open the door and let the light pour over,'' it becomes a swirling, almost psychedelic instrumental - a belated tribute to Brian Jones, who recorded an album by the Jajouka musicians before his death in 1969."
At least there are two of us who heard it. Anyway, it was fun to hear Steel Wheels after not playing it for years. I liked it more than I recall. And I know not everyone agrees, collecting vinyl has become a fun hobby, and I do find I listen to entire albums vs. skipping songs. Happy Saturday everyone.
