Eddie Cochran ("Summertime Blues", "3 Steps to Heaven" among many others used electric bassist with his band in the late 50's. At the time the instrument was commonly referred to as Fender Bass, since Fender had been the first manufacturer to mass market the electric bass. Cochran was was also a top notch guitarist and preferred electric bass as having a harder more rock-n-roll sound. As early as the mid-50's it had also been discovered by some jazz and studio musicians, although purists still preferred the upright bass, and many still do.
