RE: RE: Brown Sugar

I just never got it, why people would think that. The Stones were writing many dirty songs around that time, and they didn't write this one to put down black girls, not at all. Mick was into black woman, after all.

Then there were 3 other stories that floated around about this song. One, that Mick actually didn't write this song about black woman at all, not at first. He wrote it about black men, from the viewpoint of a rich, southern, white female slave owner who was making it with her slaves. He only changed the lyrics around after he wrote it so it came out the way it did.... Then supposedly the song was at first titled "Black Pussy", and he changed the title knowing going with that title would cause the song to be censored.... Third, the song had a double meaning to it, and that it was also about brown heroin, too, and it is true that this kind of H, which is usually smoked and not injected, is often called "brown sugar' by it's users, who often use the word "taste" for when they smoke it. So the lyric "how come you taste so good" would have a totally different meaning to it when looking at it in that light.

When I wrote my Stones book years ago, I did ask around, including people who knew and hung out a lot with the Glimmer Twins, and I asked about this song. What I was told was that indeed, the song did have 2 meanings to it - but it's main meaning wasn't about the drug. Also that yes, it was at first written about black male slaves, but that shortly after MJ started to write it, he changed the lyrics around to have it be only about women. As far as the title at first being "Black Pussy", nobody knew for sure if that was true or not.
