Artists are often their most severe critics, and Lennon for one never hesitated to pan his own songs, as well as Paul's if he did not care for them. What makes "A Day In The Life" exceptional is that two unfinished songs, one each from John and Paul" came together seamlessly to become of of the band's classic productions. The sequencing of this song toward the end of SPLCB was another masterstroke. George Martin deserves much of the credit, as does McCartney for his part in scoring the string crescendos that tie the song elements together.
