RE: The polls as they are + Gasland, too

Not sure what you mean by that, but for the record, years ago when we had a ton of posters here (before there was any social media sites to steal our posters away), we had few voters at the polls. Being that my former business half dealt in this kind of thing, I knew that few people were into taking part in polling, and if I got more than 1% of the Gassers to vote, that would be a lot, and no, we weren't seeing that early on at all. Most Gassers were interested in the results only, while not taking part in the voting, which I never totally understood. But it works the same way in elections for our government, too, so maybe I shouldn’t be too surprised, either.

Then fast forward to today, where we have a lot less posters at Gasx3, yet the polls are going very strong. But, and a big but, most of the voters to the rock poll do not come from Gasland. Yet most of the voters to the Stones poll, along with an even number of the voters to the Beatles poll, do come from here (that being, coming directly from this poll thread each week).

Just being around a long time is one thing that has helped out the polls in general, although not so much the Stones poll. Yet then again, the increase for the Stones poll isn’t that bad, either, it just depends how you look at it. I guess a 100% increase in votes for the Stones poll could be looked at as a big increase, but then again, we are looking at an 18 year period, too. That’s a long time and there’s a lot more people online today than there were back in ’99.

What totally blows me away is that here at Gasland, we have maybe half the posters we used to have, maybe even less that that if you go by who posted before we had the password system installed. Yet we are at an all-time high in lurkers here, there are less posts to read yet more posts are being read (per person) – by far. That blows me away, but I guess many readers look at this place as a long running soap opera and just keep showing up to read it every day. I also believe/know that back in the day when we had a lot of nonsense posts being written, that many lurkers never took the time to read any of those and just skipped over them. Now that there are fewer posts to read, none of the posts, for the most part, ever get skipped. Fatmo asked the other day why we had NSC posts, well, they always been among the most read, yet the truth is we have seen a decrease in them, too. They also used to cause the most problems here as far as flames went (but that’s not the case today). Since I put in place the no flame rule last April, there hasn’t been one single flame post made here, not one (!!) which has made this joint so much better a place. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I rather see fewer posts here with no flames than a lot of posts with some flames. It’s actually been a fun place to run again as the board web master, whereas last year at this time I was ready to close the place down. Yes, it meant running away several posters who were causing trouble and even banning 3 of them, and I can’t say I miss any of them. Yet I would welcome most of them all back if they just promised to not flame again.

Since somebody wrote me the other day asking about this in regard to the poll numbers, I’ll close this reply out with these numbers - let’s call them the Top 10 poll numbers at the domain for each weekly poll. First I’ll start with the regular Rock Poll since it’s the all-time high vote getter. So for it the top 10 vote totals are: 1003, 988, 924, 912, 908, 856, 840, 835, 822, and 814 reached 2 times…. For the Rock VS Poll: 756, 727, 717, 711, 706 (reached 2 times), 704, 701, 695 and 693…. Beatles Poll: 805, 746, 744, 728, 723, 712 (reached 2 times), 710, 707 and 706. Then for the Stones poll, I only keep one count for this poll (unlike the Rock Poll) since the album VS polls are still a part of the main Stones poll and were only started as a separate, weekly thing in the last year: 735, 732, 731, 730, 727, 716, 715, 714, 713 and 712.

So as you can see, even with this small amount of data, the Stones poll is more even in what it sees each week compared to the others, and why I’m hoping to see more votes being cast in it while it’s still around…. It only has 85 weeks left to go, Ronnie!
