3 Stones Albums/Political songs/Solo Fabs/more

It’s time to get week 915 of our Stones poll going along with our other weekly polls. As usual, we will hold 2 Stones polls in this one week. The first poll question is: What is the most underrated song on the Stones Aftermath album?.

Week 6 of looking for the most underrated song on each of the Stones studio albums. Now of course, there were 2 versions of this great LP, with the U.K. release the first one released, on April 15, 1966, and having several more songs on it than its U.S. counterpart, which came out 2 months later. For this poll we will look at all the songs together from the 2 releases, including the 4 missing songs from the U.S. album: "Out of Time", "Take It or Leave It", "What to Do", and "Mother's Little Helper", and then on the U.S. version, even with its fewer songs, it still had one song that wasn’t on the U.K. version, that being the hit single "Paint It Black". So that makes for a total of 15 songs to pick from when you go to vote and look for the one that was most underrated out of the bunch. To cast your vote in this first Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

This week at the Stones album VS poll, we ask: Dirty Work vs Bridges To Babylon, which album do you like the best?

vs

Yes, the Very Dirty Polls return this week, featuring the only Stones album that hasn't won a single round yet in our VS poll series, that being 1986's Dirty Work. DW has appeared in this series more than any other album, and this week just might be its last chance to have a shot at winning, mainly because of the album that it's up against, (I’ll get to that LP in a sec.) DW's last place record is 0-18, so just by looking at the numbers; it doesn't have too many chances left to win anyway, if only for that reason. But in this round, it goes up against another unpopular Stones album, and let's face it, 1997's Bridges To Babylon was never well loved by fans, and in this series, it sits just above DW in the standings, in second to last place with a 1-10 record. In fairness to B2B, just above it in the standings is Undercover, at 1-9, with Undercover’s only win coming in its matchup against - you guessed it - DW. So in short time, I got a feeling that B2B will pull slightly ahead of Undercover, that is, if it can pull off a win this week.

To see the song list for each album, for Dirty Work , go here: DW, and for Bridges To Babylon, go here: B2B.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

At the Stones two polls last week, in the first one, the question asked was: What is the most underrated song on the Stones December's Children (And Everybody's) album?.

"Blue Turns to Grey" was chosen the most underrated on DC by near landside numbers, taking in 27.7% of the votes, 16% more than the second place choice. You can check out the full, final results from this poll, here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 914 poll 1.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Goats Head Soup vs The Rolling Stones, Now!, which album do you like the best?

vs

Wow was this one close at the very end! Although GHS was ahead for the entire week, it was ahead by about 3 votes on average at the end of each day, but then last night TRSN had tied GHS, yet in the end, the host LP won by 2 votes. To see that final result, just click on here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 914, poll 2. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Now over to the Classic Rock Poll, it’s week 555, and just like we do at the Stones poll, we run 2 poll questions a week at this one, too. The first poll’s question will ask this: What is the best rock song written about (or directed towards) politicians? With all the talk about politicians in the last 2 weeks since asshole took over the White House, I figured this would be as good a time to ask this question.

Now there are 3 or 4 songs listed for this poll where one might argue if the person the song is about was really a politician or not. By calling a person a "politician", some will say such a person has to (or once had to) hold office, but of course there’s more to being such a person, too, and for this poll, we cover more than office holders. If a person was strongly involved in politics, then they get in to this poll too, as they should, since they are or were politicians too. Some of the people the songs are about were jailed or died for their cause while never holding any office, some ran for office and weren't elected, too, and others were political activists. So yes, they are included in the list. But still, not all such people who had songs written about them are included; it depends on what the song that was written about them, was about. One might say that John Lennon was a politician, and in a way I can understand that line of thought, but deep down he was known as an musician first, and while an activist too, no songs about him are listed since I couldn’t think of any written about him that dealt only with the activist part of him. Same deal with songs about others, like Timothy Leary, and a few others like that. Leary had a song or 2 written about him too, but they were drug songs for the most part. Also, some of the songs listed aren't about any one person at all... an example would be one of the songs listed that the Sex Pistols made, "Anarchy in the U.K.' which is about getting rid of government and the politicians who run it. I almost didn't list that one since it doesn't totally fit the question, but then again, after thinking it over, it totally does. If you don't think a song like that fits the question, then don't vote for it even if you like it. A few of these numbers are antiwar songs, too, but if they are directed at politicians, they got listed.

To vote in this poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week's VS poll, it’s week 9 of the "Same title, different song" polls. This week's question is: 'Good Times Bad Times' by Led Zeppelin vs 'Good Times Bad Times' by The Rolling Stones, which one of these 2 songs with the same title, is better?

These 2 songs are very much different even if they have the same title, which has been the case with all of the songs we have matched up when using this question.

The Stones "Good Times Bad Times" was early '60s rock (from 1964) - simple, straight forward rock music recorded before the genre changed and went into a higher gear in the mid '60s. The Zeppelin number sounds more like modern day rock 'n roll, since by '69 when it was released, that's how rock music sounded. As usual, you can listen to the songs in the voting booth before you vote.

To make your pick between these 2 songs, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: What's the best Rock song about the telephone, or about calling somebody on the phone? !

“Memphis Tennessee” by Chuck Berry (and covered by many more), took the top honors with 8.2% of the votes, while second place went to Steely Dan’s “Rikki Don't Lose That Number’, at 7.9%, and in third was the very old rock song with the old time telephone number containing an exchange in it (which hasn’t been around for what, 50 years now?) “Beechwood 45789” by The Marvelettes, at 7.7%. I always love it when old, pre Classic Rock songs do well in our polls, and last week for both rock polls that was the case.

To see the full, final results from this poll, click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 553 Or, to just view the final top ten picks from this poll, they will show up at Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s Rock VS poll, we asked: 'Bye Bye Love' by The Everly Brothers vs 'Bye Bye Love' by The Cars, which one of these 2 songs with the same title is better?

The Everly Brothers old ‘50s Rock song won big….. To see how well they did, just head over here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 554. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Finally we get to the Beatles poll, where it’s week 308, and this week’s question is: On what post Beatle song did Paul McCartney shine the brightest on?

As you may recall, last week we looked at the best solo album put out by a former Beatle, and the voting went so well that I decided to ask this week for the best solo song made by the former band mates. But there were just so many songs to choose from, well over 100 if I just listed the best known ones. So I decided instead to first vote for each solo Beatle separately, and then after that - take the top 10 (or so) songs voted on in each week, and then vote on them in one last poll. Yes, the same as a 4 part poll, other than the question would change each week and feature one former Beatle at a time (therefore not a true multi part question). Also, since this question had already been asked about Lennon back in 2012, I see no reason to ask it again for him. So we already got the songs we will list for him in the final week (results from that poll can be found here. You will notice that I worded the question in the same way I worded it for the Lennon poll over 4 years ago. To vote for the Macca song that you like best, go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: What was the best solo album by a former Beatle?

Yes, the Beatles poll last week did very well in the vote count, as this turned into a very popular question, with the result breaking the 800 marker for the Beatles poll for the first time. Yet, out of the 63 poll choices of their different solo LPs, only 17 of the listed LPs got any votes, with 2 of those albums only seeing 3 votes between them, and another 10 of them receiving 41% of the votes between them. So in other words, the remaining top 5 albums took in over 57% of the votes. Those 5 top vote getters were: All Things Must Pass by George Harrison, the top pick and winner, at 11.9%, second was a tie between Band on the Run by Paul McCartney (w/ Wings), and Imagine by John Lennon, at 11.4% each, along with the last 2 in the Top 5 both from Lennon, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (at 11.3%) and Double Fantasy (w/ Yoko Ono) at 11.1%.

In the meanwhile, you can check out the final results from last week’s VS poll, here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 307. Or, you can check out the poll’s winner at the following Beatles list page, just click on Beatles Miscellaneous Listings, which is located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well, that does it for this week’s poll thread. On average, most of you who read my weekly poll post – never vote in any of the polls; and even as the poll numbers do grow a bit each week, it would be great to see more of you taking part, especially in the Stones poll, where we now see the least votes each week on average, out of the 5 weekly polls! That seems almost impossible with all the traffic the Stones site sees, along with all the readers that still lurk here and read this poll post each week. But sadly, it’s true, although not by much. Plus I’m not saying the Stones polls aren’t doing well, both are, they just isn’t doing as great as the other polls are doing. But, if you read all the way down to here, you must have some interest in these polls, right? So why not join the rest of us and have a say in how all of these polls turn out by voting right now… and especially by voting in the 2 Stones polls! It’s a lot of fun to vote and easy to do, and it takes only seconds to cast your vote! So please – vote, and let’s see the Stones poll do as well as the other weekly polls do (and remember, there’s an extra Stones question being asked this week thanks to the Rock VS poll)!

As usual, a big “thank you” to those of you who do vote in each and every week!
