Week 900! of Stones poll/Subliminal messages/more

Week 900 of the Stones poll is upon us, yes, that’s a cool milestone to reach in this poll indeed, and with it being the 900th week means that we now have exactly 100 weeks of Stones polls left to run (or just under 2 years’ worth of questions to answer). So still, a long time to go by the time we reach that 1,000 marker.

As usual, we will run 2 Stones polls this week, and the first question askes: The Rolling Stones' “Let it Bleed” (actual title) vs “Bleed on Me” (title some fans call it), which title is better?

The second and last week where the Stones, Beatles, and VS Rock polls will ask similar questions in this vein of actual song titles and the tiles some fans call their songs instead. This week we look at the great song “Let it Bleed" at the Stones poll. The title of this song refers to what junkies will say when shooting up, and while having a hard time finding a vein to inject their heroin (or whatever drug they are mainlining) into their bodies. The more one shoots up, the harder it is to find a vein to shoot into, as veins will collapse and become damaged from a lot of shooting up, so once a junkie does hit blood and find that vein to shoot into, well, that's where the title to the song comes into play. Of course there's a second meaning to the title too, which is reflected in the lyrics, just as drug usage is. The lyrics in the song make it clear that the singer’s lover can lean on him for support, and “can bleed all over me”, so perhaps the alternate title reflects this part of the song better.

Which title do you think works better for the song? To cast your vote in this first Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The week's second Stones poll will ask this: Voodoo Lounge vs 12x5, which album do you like the best?

vs

The "I Put a Voodoo Spell on you” polls return this week to the Stones album VS series featuring the 1994 release Voodoo Lounge, sporting a 5-6-0 record in this polling series and sitting in 15th place in the standings. It will go up against the least voted on album in this series, 12x5, even though of late this 1965 LP has been voted on a bunch, and has a 2-3-1 record and sits in 17th place.

To see the song list for each album, for Voodoo Lounge, go here: VL, and for 12x5, go here: 12x5.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

At the Stones polls last week in the first poll, the question we asked was: The Rolling Stones' “Sympathy for the Devil” (actual title) vs “The Devil is My Name” (original title), which title is better?

Most Stones fans just don't wish to mess with this masterpiece's title too much, as the final results show in a landslide. To see those results, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 899 poll 1.You can also check out the final results at the Stones Stones VS Lists Page 2 .

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, it asked: A Bigger Bang vs Black and Blue, which album do you like the best?

vs

Boy was this one close all week long. At the end of some days ABB was ahead, and not on other days. In the end, the album I voted for came out on top (yes, hard to believe, I finally got one right). You can see the very close results here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 899, poll 2. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

At the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 540, and as usual we’ll vote in 2 polls in this one too. The first question this week is: What was the most interesting or clever subliminal message (aka Backmasking/aka Backwards lyrics) in a song?

I wasn't sure how I wanted this one worded at first. I had it asking for the best song listed, but it's supposed to be the backmasking that this poll is really about, so I changed it to "best backmasting" instead of best song, but then realized, even I, who doesn't believe in Satan, doesn't wish to promote any evil messages, and there's nothing "best" in promoting a message that is evil, even if it is a fiction thing to me, it's still evil, and of course to many, the devil is real. So I ended up changing the question one last time to how it reads now. I like the word "clever" in there, even I could vote for one of the Satan choices with it reading in such a matter, but with that said, no, none of the Satan choices will be what I vote on, either, since there are several other choices that are a better pick, IMO, and that's what the question is all about. I should also note that not all of the subliminal messages listed are satanic, in fact, less than half are.

Guess I should note that I also have to now watch out for the Google ads, which I have run on this domain for years. The censors who run that place are becoming very uncool towards independent web site owners of late in what is on a web site/domain, and they don't like words that they feel should be censored, showing up where their ads show, and now they will threaten and suspended a domains' entire account over it (just who here are they protecting, and from what?!). Yet I can't afford to lose the revenue I make from these ads, especially with me no longer running fundraisers here for this board's expensive server rent. Google has gotten on to me about the Stones site in the last half year. So at the poll admin, I had to play around some with the choices that contains “bad” words in some of the messages (without censoring any of those words).

You may have noticed in the past that the poll's admin populates the poll's choices which we choose from, in alphabetical order, which does work out best when listing choices. But, since the first 2 choices that would have been listed from these choices, used censored words that Google doesn't like, I had to make sure I could get around such un-American censorship, without censoring anything myself. I fixed it so the first thing Google won't see, is those words that normally would have showed up first on the drop down menu, since their censor happy people would have an easy time spotting such words (yes, they are watching us from time to time, just like a bunch of Nazis). But if such words are listed down inside the menu where you don’t see them on first view, such words are nowhere as big a problem to them. So where you see an "x" before 2 choices, that's the 2 choices I had to play around with so they didn't show up first on the list, and this way now we can still vote on these subliminal messages exactly how they were put on the record by the artists. So with that noted; now a Pink Floyd song with a harmless backward message is shown first on the list instead. I should also note that some of these messages showed in the poll (like the PF message) are actually a bit longer to what you will see listed (I had to cut a few just a bit because of space issues), so in that case, only the main part of the message is listed. This happened on about 3 of them, that's all, and it was the only way to get them to show up. But I tell ya, it shouldn’t be so damn hard to put a simple poll together as it was this week!

It does seem ridiculous that in the real word, off line, one of these messages, “Try suicide, Do it" from the cover song "Better By You, Better than Me", by Judas Priest, lead to a major lawsuit against the band. You may remember this happened back in 1990, when Judas Priest was taken to court and sued for $6.2 million in damages after 2 teens committed suicide together, and their parents claimed it was because of the subliminal messages in the song that told them to kill themselves. Clearly that case had more to do with very bad parenting than anything else, and yes, those parents lost their case in the end, just as they should have.

Okay, it's time to vote, you got 24 choices to choose from. I think I got all of the best known backmasking songs listed, but a few of the not so well known ones I did skip over, since I already know such songs won't get any votes. But if I did forget to list a big one, please do let me know ASAP. To vote in this poll, go here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s Rock VS poll the question is: Jefferson Airplane's 'White Rabbit' (actual title) vs 'Go Ask Alice' (title fans gave it), which title is better?.

For this week's VS poll we look at the title of the Jefferson Airplane's song "White Rabbit", yet another drug song with a title that isn’t sung in the song, and many fans just call it "Go Ask Alice", a lyric that is sung in the song.

Which title do you like better? To make your pick, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: What is your favorite song by The Electric Light Orchestra?

ELO’s great cover of Chuck Berry’s “Roll over Beethoven,” came out on top with 8.6% of the vote. “Ma-Ma-Ma Belle”, the song I voted for, landed in second at 8.1%, and “Mr. Blue Sky” was third with 7.9% of all votes.

You can check out the full, final results from this Rock poll by clicking here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 539. You can also check out the final top 10 results at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 13.

In last week’s Rock VS poll, we asked: The Who's 'Baba O'Riley' (actual title) vs 'Teenage Wasteland' (title fans gave it), which title is better?

Well of the 3 polls run last week on song titles, this one here at the Rock VS poll resonated the most with fans, and 'Baba O'Riley' was the only song title out of the 3 featured last week that fans rejected, and by a rather sound margin. That, and a new record high vote count for this poll took place last week, so finally, the last poll that never had seen the 700 marker in total votes, did so last week. To see the final results from this VS Rock poll, click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 539. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where it’s week 293, and this week’s new question is: The Beatles 'Yer Blues' (actual title) vs 'Girl You Know the Reason Why' (title some fans call it), which title is better?

This week we look at a different Lennon song, a song that he wrote while thinking about what to do with this new woman in his life (Yoko) while still living with his first wife (Cynthia). The title as it is, causes much confusion and I’ve seen different explanations given to what it means. Some say “Yer” is how some in the UK pronounce “Your”, and the title really is “Your Blues”. But that isn’t what the song is about; it’s about Lennon’s blues, so it should be “My Blues” if that was the case. I’ve also read online that according to Paul McCartney, John first titled the song “Year Blues” and “Yer” is how John pronounces the word “year”, so Paul suggested to John to write the title out that way, and he did. Okay, but what does Year Blues means? Anyway, maybe that’s why some fans just call it 'Girl You Know the Reason Why'.

To vote in this week’s Beatles poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: The Beatles' 'A Day In The Life' (actual title) vs 'I Love to Turn You On' (title some fans call it), which title is better?

Like at the Stones poll last week, Beatle fans also didn't seem to like this question, but I expected that from Fab fans, as you just can't mess with Beatle songs - or their titles. Perhaps that should tell us what to expect from this week's question, too? Oh well, we will see. Anyway, to see the landslide results from last week, just go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 292.

Well that does it for this week’s poll post. As usual, thanks to all of you who voted in our 5 weekly polls!
