RE: This book.on Altamont., and another one....

Altamont: The Rolling Stones, Hell's Angels and the inside story of Rock's Darkest Day (that's the official title), by Joel Selvin.

I was sent a reviewers copy several months ago, before the book was released, and asked to write up a review if I liked it. I was impressed that they sent me a hard cover version, as usually these versions are sent out in paperback. It wasn't until 2 months ago that I actually got around to reading it, but as of today, I'm only half through it, as I guess I would say it's the kind of book you can put down and forget to get back to. That isn't meant to be a put-down of the book, I find it some what interesting, but usually when I'm reading a great book I will read it nonstop and finish it in a few days. So your post on this was if nothing else, a reminder for me to get back to reading this book again. But no, this here isn't it's review by me, still don't know if I'll write one up or not for it, I'll see after I'm finished up reading it. But it's okay, so far.

I was also sent, around the same time, an advanced promo copy of another soon to be released book titled Life of the Poets (with Guitars), by Ray Robertson. This book must be out by now. I very much did enjoy reading this one (never put it down) and I wrote a review for it that appeared in a few smaller Colorado and New Mexico newspapers or magazines, as that's where most of my book reviews end up today, and not here on the domain (freelance writing has been something I've been doing a bunch of late, as I now only write one article a month for the local newspaper [The Crestone Eagle], after being one of their 2 main writers for 15 years).

This book consists of essays on Gene Clark, Ronnie Lane, The Ramones, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Townes Van Zandt, Little Richard, Alan Wilson, Willie P. Bennett, Gram Parsons, Hound Dog Taylor, Paul Siebel, Willis Alan Ramsey, and John Hartford. Robertson writes about each of these 13 artists in separate chapters, covering not only their art, but their lives, too. The only thing that disappointed me in this book was what he wrote about Hound Dog Taylor, an artist whom I have a website for (you must have seen it). I clearly know a bunch more about the Hound than he, and I believe my Hound Dog Bio covers the man more than the chapter Robertson wrote about him. But, all of the other essays were well written and informative, and yes, I do recommend this book to anybody who is into a few of these mainly late musicians.
