Antiwar Stones/GHS vs ABB/Animals/Soul vs Pop/Fabs

Week 897 of the Stones poll is here, and as usual, we will run 2 different Stones poll questions. For our first Stones poll, the new question will be this: 'Street Fighting Man' vs 'Blinded By Rainbows', which Stones song is the better anti-war song?

Do understand the question, it's not asking for the better song, but the better anti-war song. So the lyrics are the most important part of this question, along with how well the song was sung by Mick, but yes, the music still counts some, too.

'Street Fighting Man' came first, released way back in 1968 on Beggars Banquet, but before that, when still in the studio, it was a totally different song (called ‘Pay Your Dues’), at least lyric wise. In fact, at first it appeared the Stones had their new song finished, the music was already completed along with the original lyrics, but something just didn’t sound right to them. Then Mick attended an antiwar protest held in the UK at the US embassy, one that was opposing the Viet Nam war, and it inspired him to write the lyrics to SFM, which would replace the lyrics to PYD, but kept the powerful music recorded for it.

'Blinded by Rainbows' was released in 1994 on Voodoo Lounge and was about the never ending religious war in Northern Ireland between Catholics and Protestants. Whereas SFM was about people demonstrating against war, this one was more a statement as to the horrible things that war and fighting does to people.

There’s links to the lyrics for each song in the voting booth. But it’s time to answer the question now, which one was the better antiwar song to you? To cast your vote in this first Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The week's second Stones poll will ask this: Goats Head Soup vs A Bigger Bang, which album do you like the best?

vs

The Soup Polls returns this week, featuring the Stones 1973 LP Goats Head Soup, going up this time against 2005’s A Bigger Bang. For GHS in our Stones’ album vs album series, a winning record, at 6-3, good for 9th place in the standings. ABB is at 4-5-1, in 15th place.

To see the song list for each album, for Goats Head Soup, go here: GHS, and for A Bigger Bang, go here: ABB.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Stones poll we asked: Which Stones' era was the best: The Brian Jones years, the Mick Taylor years, or the Ron Wood years?.

Well friends… last week we finally did it, we broke the 700 mark in this Stones poll! As far as the question went, it was a good one indeed, but the contest was really only between the BJ years and MT years. To see which one came out on top, go here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 896 poll 1.You can also check out the final results at the Stones Stones Top Picks Page 2under “Other Miscellaneous Stones’ Lists”.

Last week at the Stones VS poll, we asked: Beggars Banquet vs The Rolling Stones, Now!, which album do you like the best?

vs

This poll also had a great turnout last week, just missing the 700 vote mark. Beggars Banquet won the poll in a landslide. You can check out just how huge the final landslide was by clicking here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 896, poll 2. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

At the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 537, and as usual we’ll vote in 2 polls in this one too. The first question this week is: What is your favorite song by The Animals?

The Animals were a very successful band that formed back in 1963 and were a part of the British invasion in the U.S. Their prime time was from ’65 till ’69, and then there was 2 reunions by the original members, first in 1974, and another one in 1983, both times resulting in new studio albums. Eric Burdon was their lead singer and leader, and by the late ‘60s the band was known as “Eric Burdon and the Animals” and by then, Burdon was the only original member left. But they had several top 10 hits along with bestselling albums all over the world.

There will be 30 songs in our poll and it’s time to now vote for your favorite one listed. To do that and see the songs that are listed, go here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s Rock VS poll, it’s the 5th week of “The full of Soul, polls”, and the question is: R&B/Soul/Motown vs, Pop, which music genre do you like more?.

Now yes, some R&B/Soul/Motown songs are Pop songs, but of course we are looking at the entire genre here and most of it isn’t.

Which genre do you like better? To make your pick, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: What is your favorite song by Stevie Wonder?

Another poll last week that also saw a lot of votes cast, actually, a lot more than the 2 Stones polls saw, but no records here. As far as the results, one song written by Stevie stood out, that being “Living for the City”, taking in 8.2% of the vote. Second place went to “Superstition” at 7.1%, and a tie for third between “I Wish” and “Uptight (Everything's Alright)”, both seeing 5.1%.

You can check out the full, final results from this Rock poll by clicking here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 536. You can also check out the final results at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 13.

In last week’s Rock VS poll, we asked: R&B/Soul/Motown vs Classic Rock, which music genre do you like more?

This was the first week where R&B/Soul/Motown didn’t win in a landslide, in fact, it didn’t win. But beating out the genre that the poll is about would have been a tall task, to say the least.

To see the final results from this VS Rock poll, click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 536. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where it’s week 290, and this week’s new question is: Which Beatles song has the best Harmonica playing in it?

My guess is that the harmonica would be the one instrument fans would name as the instrument that the Beatles used most in their early day songs other than their normal instruments of guitar, bass and drums. It is also known that one reason many of the early Stones songs had a lot of harp in them was because the Beatles used the harmonica in theirs, in fact in their very first get together as friends over at the Stones flat after a Stones show, Brian Jones asked John Lennon for some tips on playing the harp. Lennon was of course the Beatles main harmonica player, playing it on every single Beatle song where a harp is heard (other than he had some help on 2 of them).

Yet the truth of the matter is, the Beatles, even in their early days, rarely ever used the harmonica in their songs. I came up with only 10 early day Beatle songs that featured the harp, and then it was heard on another 3 tunes after that. They did have one song each on their first 4 albums that featured a harmonica, so they did use the instrument, just perhaps not as much as some remember.

But on most of the songs they did use the harp on, it did stand out. So on which one did it sound best to you? To vote in this week’s Beatles poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: 'I Am the Walrus' vs 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds', which psychedelic Lennon written Beatle song is better?

We saw the third largest vote count ever at this poll last week (after breaking the record 2 weeks ago), right at 700 total votes. This one saw very close voting in it all week long, and in the end, 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds' took first place by just 4 votes.

To see the final results, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 289. Or, you can check out the poll’s winner at this Beatles list page, just click on Beatles VS page, which is located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

That will do it for this week’s poll post. Damn did last week fly by for me; I really wish things would slow down some. Thanks to all who voted in record numbers in our polls last week and I hope everybody has a great week ahead!
