RE: RE: K and W....nsc

Radio Stations also have call signs that begin with W out east.

Right, and they start with a K out west (with "X" in Mexico, "C" in Canada).

Most countries were given one single letter, some a letter and number to start their radio call letters. The US was given 2 since the country was so big, and the east was suppose to have the K and the west the W, but somehow it all got mixed up. Up until the early 1920s, it didn't matter where the new radio stations that started to pop up were located as far as all of that went, then the US government decided that the Mississippi River would be the border line as to where all of that changes, east of the Mississippi had to use use "W", west, "K". A few stations already on the air were allowed to keep what they had, but today, no stations out west start with a "W", a few stations in Texas start with "W", and only 2 stations back east, both in Pennsylvania, start with "K". There is one station in Chicago that also starts with a K I believe.

The very same rules applies to TV stations too, but not to NOAA radio stations. NOAA stations used to be the total opposite, with K used in the east and W used in the west, but sometime in the '70s, both letters were started to be used all over the country and today it doesn't matter where they are located, they can and do use either letters. This had something to do with the fact that NOAA stations didn't start up until the mid 1960s and they broadcast only on the MHz (megahertz) wavelength. Of course, the other major radio stations are on either AM and FM waves.
