THE TRAGICALLY HIP: a huge night for Canadian Rock

Tonight the Tragically Hip are playing what most people believe is their final concert ever. This happens in Kingston, Ontario, Canada tonight.

The band themselves have never actually said this is their last show, but with the lead sing having incurable brain cancer, its not unreasonable to conclude this. I wouldn't be shocked if their were another show slotted in somewhere, or if they recorded again, but clearly they are very near the end. They would never replace their lead singer. The remaining members will probably continue on separately. But The Hip is done.

Their are several Canadian rock bands that have sold more, and many other inndivual artitsts who have massively out-sold The Hip, and all of these acts are known throughout the world. And yet somehow, this band is regarded as "Canada's band".

They are undeniably a great band. Great lyrics, great melodies, and very good playing all around.

I think they obce opened for The Rolling Stones actually.

I hope that somehow the condition of Gord Downie (their front man) somehow reverses. I recall Jimmy Carter said publically he was in the final year of his life and then somehow, almost miraculously, he was fine and cancer free. Not sure if that will happen but I'll keep Downie in my prayers
