JJF/DC/ER/It's all over now/Alice Cooper/Fabs

Week 887 of the Stones poll is here, and we will vote on 2 different Stones poll questions again this week. In the first Stones poll the question is this: Rate the Rolling Stones original video of "Jumpin' Jack Flash"

Week 7 of rating the different videos that the Stones have made in the past. There are 2 different official videos for this 1968 smash hit, both made and filmed on the same day, one with the band wearing makeup (sans Keith) and which became the flash-point which started the beginning of the Glam rock look, and was the first video released for the band's new single and the one we will rate this week (in the second vid, other than MJ, there was no makeup wore by the band).

The Stones re-recorded the song for this video in the studio the night before it was filmed, so it's not what was heard on the single, but close enough. Today on YouTube, you may see this video with the original studio music from the song playing, when you do see that one, it ain't the official release and was just a video put together by a fan.

This video (which of course wasn't called a "video" in 1968 when it was made) was a major improvement over the previous first 2 that the band made in '67. The entire band is shown in this one - in mainly close-up shots from the neck up, and they have a very surreal look to them here, especially for 1968. Bill almost looks demon-like in his close-up shots, and Charlie looks feminine in his. Brian is wearing what fans called "bug-eyed" shades and is wearing what looks like very thick silver makeup (or is it gold makeup, I’m colorblind, so I can’t remember, nor see the difference between the 2 colors), while MJ has on what looks like Native American war-paint. Why Keith didn't join in with his mates and wear any makeup is not known, at least he never has said, other than he did say that he felt the video was their best one ever made and was a very "wicked" video.

This next paragraph I repeat each week for this question, and it is important if you haven’t read it yet… Remember when voting, that it’s the entire video we are voting on here, and not just the song/music. The video will be linked to from inside the voting booth so you can watch it before you vote. Make sure to take the time to watch the video before you vote, to refresh your memory of it. The link to the video can also be found here in this thread (above)… If you use the link in the poll menu (only), when you click on where the song's title is in the question, you will be sent to YouTube and the video. If you click on anywhere else in the question, that will take you to where you can vote on the question in our voting booth.

So to watch the video and then cast your vote in this first Stones poll question, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The week's second Stones poll will ask this: December's Children vs Emotional Rescue, which album do you like the best?

vs

Funny that I call this Stones album matchup VS poll, the “second Stones poll” of the week, yet since it was started up a few months ago, it has out polled (vote wise) the first, main Stones poll every single time! Hum...what does that mean? Perhaps I should call this one the number 1 poll? Well if nothing else, it means 2 Stones polls a week are working out just fine, since the main, first poll is still doing well enough.

For this week in this VS series, we will return to the matchup called "December's Poll (and everybody's)", featuring the LP December's Children, which was released in December of 1965 in the U.S. Funny that this so titled “December's Poll”, has never once been run in the month of December before, so perhaps I should make sure to bring it back next December and run it then?

Anyway, DC contained 12 songs to it including the hits "As Tears Go By", and "Get off My Cloud"….. In the album standings for this LP, DC is down there some, in 16th place with a 3-4 record. This week it goes up against 1980's Emotional Rescue, which is having an even tougher time in those same standings, with a 1-5 record while in 20th place. We just voted on this LP a few weeks ago, so I’ll say no more about it, you know it well enough. But to see the song list for each album, for December's Children , go here: DC, and for Emotional Rescue , go here: ER.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Stones poll we asked: Rate the Rolling Stones video ”Undercover of the Night".

I just noted above that this Stones VS poll is seeing more votes cast each week over the first, main poll, and it is, and last week, and for the first time since 2 Stones polls a week started, both of them beat out the Rock poll in total votes cast. In fact, the first rock poll, which is almost always the top voted on poll of the week, came in dead last for poll votes out of the 5 polls run - although it still did well in total votes anyway, all the other polls just beat it out last week. But I'll write about that poll in just a bit, for now let's look at the Stones poll results.

For this question last week, I can see that the ”Undercover of the Night" video isn’t just my favorite Stones video, but many others must agree with me, as a “10” was the top pick with 29.6% of the vote. In second was an “8” at 23.7%, and landing in third was a “9”, at 22.7%.

To see the full, final results, go here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 886, poll 1. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the Stones Fans Top Pick List Page 2 , under “Video Ratings”.

Last week at the Stones VS poll, we asked: It's Only Rock 'n Roll vs Tattoo You, which album do you like the best?

vs

Last week we re-ran the “It’s only a Rock ‘n Roll poll” polls again, and in this second poll, we saw the second highest vote total for the Stones poll reached, and for only the second time in all of the years of running this matchup of the Stones LPs, the polling closed in a tie. Yeah, a damn tie! These 2 LPs were neck and neck for the entire week, and with all of these votes cast, no one album ever pulled ahead by more than a few votes, only for the other album to overtake it in the next day. So I guess a tie is appropriate, even if I hate ties for first place, thank goodness they are rare. You can see the final totals from this poll by clicking here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 886, poll 2. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 527, and as usual we’ll vote in 2 polls in this one too. The first question in the Rock Poll this week is: Who was the most underrated member of Alice Cooper?

Before there was a performer named Alice Cooper, there was a band named Alice Copper, with a lead singer named Vincent Furnier, who would later on change his name to Alice Cooper. This band started up in 1964 as a high school Beatles tribute band (and since this was in ’64, they must have been the first such Beatle tribute band). They loved the reaction they would get from screaming girls when they played up on stage that they decided they had to become a real, true band, with their own original material if they wanted to keep this band going. Then one day in 1968, when they were starting to play in bigger venues on the west coast, and were first starting to turn heads, they saw the Rolling Stones performing in their "Jumpin' Jack Flash" film (video), and liking the look that the Stones were portraying, the newly named Alice Cooper band decided to also wear heavy makeup while playing live (something men just never did in ’68), and although all five members of the band were straight, they decide to shock everybody a bit more and would also wear dresses while playing (that idea came to them since the band had a female name, but no females in it… But no, the fact the Stones were the first male band to dress in drag, that didn’t have anything to do with this move, unlike the Stones makeup in JJF, did). This new look for the band made that many more people take notice of them, and all of a sudden the Glam/Glitter movement in Rock music was born, with Alice Cooper being the first Glam Rock band. David Bowie, along with Marc Bolen of T-Rex, are sometimes mistakenly noted as the first Glam rockers, but they were the first to note that it was after seeing the Alice Cooper band play live - that was what got them interested in the new sub-genre called “Glam”, and soon after, even more rockers would join them.

But Alice Cooper wasn't only the first Glam band, but they were one of the very first Heavy Metal bands, and also one of the first Punk bands, and New Wave bands, too. Guess I should note that they also started theatrical rock, and were the very first band to write and perform Goth Rock songs, too. They really did a bit of everything, and while singer Alice was the frontman while up on stage, all 5 members were equals in the band, they all made the decisions on how the band operated, and they all owned the name "Alice Cooper". Yet it was rhythm guitarist Michael Bruce who musically led the band and wrote most of the music and almost all of the lyrics to the hit songs, although Alice also wrote a bunch of the lyrics, too.

The band, which was a major hit in both the U.S. and in the U.K., broke up in 1974, and after that Alice Cooper the singer, went solo. But nobody should ever get solo Alice and the band Alice Cooper mixed up. There was a big difference between the 2. It was the band - and not solo Alice, which was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame a few years back. Plus some great news for those of us who are old Cooper fans, is that the original band members (other than lead guitarist Glen Buxton, who passed away in the 1997) will get back together this year to record a new album after singer Alice's current tour with the Hollywood Vampires is finished. Yes!

You can read up some more on the band Alice Cooper here: Alice Cooper Bio.

For this week’s Rock VS poll, the new question is: 'It's All Over Now': Rolling Stones’ cover vs Rod Stewart’s cover, which version is better?

One could say that we’re running 3 Stones polls this week, but no, not at all… it just happens that the Stones come up in 3 polls this week, that’s all, but this is of course the Rock VS poll, which the Stones, like most classic rock bands, come up in once in a while.

"It's All Over Now" is a song written by Bobby Womack and Shirley Womack. It was first released by The Valentinos which featured Bobby and his 4 brothers. But it only became a hit for the first time when the Stones covered it in July of 1964. The single went to number 1 in the UK on the UK Singles Chart, and in the U.S. the song only peaked at number 26, but it stayed on the U.S. charts for more than 10 weeks, so that made it a hit over here, too. This song featured one of the earliest weaves of 2 guitars, something that Brian and Keith are credited as starting in rock music. On this song Brain played a 12 string, while Keith played the main lead on 6 string.

Rod Stewart also had a hit with this song, thanks in part to future Stone Ron Wood, who plays one hot lead on this number. The song first appeared on Rod’s second solo LP Gasoline Alley, released in 1970, but Rod had been playing this song live with The Faces long before it was placed on this LP.

Both songs can be heard before you vote, as usual, in the voting booth. Just remember, we are not voting on the videos, just the songs, the vids are there just so you can hear the songs before you vote… To vote on this VS question, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: Who was the most underrated member of Jethro Tull's classic lineup? .

The voting was close, but only between 2 members, that being lead guitarist Martin Barre, and frontman Ian Anderson, with Barre beating out Anderson by one single vote for first place in the end.

You can check out the full, final results from this Rock poll by clicking here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 526. You can also check out the final results at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now': Slade's original vs Quiet Riot’s cover, which version is better?

For the second week in a row for our VS poll, we saw another landside win, although nowhere as big as the one we had 2 weeks ago. To see who was on the winning end of the landslide, click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 526. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We wrap up this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where it’s week 280, and this week’s new question is: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

In this series we are picking the least favorite song off each Beatle album. I guess I can just keep repeating myself over and over each week, but yes, it's not going to be easy to pick out one song from this masterpiece Beatle album (but that's going to be the case until will get though every Beatle album).

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was the 8th studio album by the Beatles, released on June 1, 1967. Like all Beatle LPs, it was an instant hit, being at number 1 for 27 weeks on the charts in the UK, and for 15 weeks at number one in the U.S.

There are 13 great songs on this LP, but which song will you pick in this poll as your least favorite? Remember, we are not looking for the worst song here, since the Beatles didn’t ever have a worst song on any of their albums, just one or 2 that weren’t loved as much as the others.

To see the songs from this LP, please use this link: Sgt. Pepper's . To vote in the poll, go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Revolver

Last week the Beatles poll lead in total votes cast, something that I think has only happened once or twice before. So fans are responding to this question in the best way they can and not skipping over it like they did a few years ago when we first started to vote on this question.

For Revolver, the least favorite song chosen was the George Harrison number “Love You To”, with 27.8% of the vote.

To see the full, final results, go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 279. Or, you can check out the results at the Beatles list page for "Songs per LP" , located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

I close this out on a down note (sorry), but the last 24 hours have been a sad one for my family, as we learned of the death of our 21 year old friend, Troy, who we’ve known since he was a baby. He was close friends with my 2 oldest grandsons back when they were all preteens, and we were close friend with his parents. Hell, it’s a terrible feeling when anybody dies, but at 21 it’s even worse. He was a cool, happy kid, and had his entire life to live, and now just like that he’s gone forever…. We really do need to be kind to everybody we know, and cherish every day we are alive, since none of us knows when any of us will see our last day, regardless of what our ages might be.

I hope all of you have a great upcoming week and do live your lives to the fullest, and thanks for voting in our polls!
