Undercover of the Night/IORR poll/JTull/VS/Fabs

Time to get week 886 of the Stones poll started up; where we vote on 2 different Stones poll questions each week. This week's first Stones poll question asks: Rate the Rolling Stones video "Undercover of the Night"

Week 6 of rating the different videos that the Stones have made in the past. A 1983 single for the Stones, "Undercover of the Night" had 2 official videos released, and this one that we're rating this week was the first one released. Both were directed by filmmaker Julien Temple, but this first one, unlike any other Stones' videos before it, was almost like a short action flick, staring Mick Jagger in dual role. Lots of violence in this short film, with Keith playing one of the bad guys, and it's Keith's character who is the one to shot and kill the P.I., which was one of the parts played my Mick (his other part was as the kidnapped victim). Yes, this one was filled with action and very fun to watch.

This next paragraph is a repeat from the last few weeks… Remember when voting that it’s the entire video we are voting on here, and not just the song/music. The video will be linked to from inside the voting booth so you can watch it before you vote. Make sure to take the time to watch the video before you vote, to refresh your memory of it. The link to the video can also be found here in this thread (above)… If you use the link in the poll menu (only), when you click on where the song's title is in the question, you will be sent to YouTube and the video. If you click on anywhere else in the question, that will take you to where you can vote on the question in our voting booth.

So to watch the video and then cast your vote in this first Stones poll question, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The week's second Stones poll will ask this: It's Only Rock 'n Roll vs Tattoo You, which album do you like the best?

vs

This week in the Stones album VS album series, is the return of the "It's Only a Rock 'n Roll Poll", polls, featuring the 1974 LP It's Only Rock 'n Roll . This album was the last original LP to feature Mick Taylor, while future Stone Ron Wood wrote most of the title track and played guitar on the song (and of course, he wasn't credited by his close friends, the Glimmers, who took the credit of writing the song, even with Keith having nothing at all to do with writing any of it). However, Keith was more a part of this album than the previous few, not letting his H problem get in the way too much, and he finally, once again, returned to appearing on all of the tracks on the LP. But still, there was a bit more guitar playing from MT than Keith on this album, even if it was his last official one with the group.

Getting back to the title cut, at first Ron Wood played all the guitar parts on his song, in a session recorded at his home, as he planned to use this song on his then upcoming solo album. But Mick J, who was there to lend a hand on the song as it was being recorded (and he did, helping to finish up writing the rest of lyrics that Ron hadn't finished writing), loved the song and he talked Ron into letting the Stones use it instead. Bill and Charlie aren't on the track at all, and Keith at first wasn't either. MJ wanted the song released the way it was recorded at Ron's place, but Keith went and erased most of Ronnie's work and added in his own guitar playing, while MT also added in yet more guitar to the song, and that's what got released in the end, since most of what Ron played was erased by Keith. Ron claims that the guitars heard at the end of the song are his, and that's all that wasn't removed by Keith. So in the end, the song that Ronnie wrote for his solo album, had most of his guitar work removed from it, was claimed by the Stones, and Ron didn’t even get any writing credit for it… Guess you can call this one Ron Wood’s “Ruby Tuesday”.

Tattoo You, released in 1981, was really an album of the 1970s, and features Mick Taylor on a few cuts, along with Bill Wyman playing guitar along with Mick Jagger on the only song, 'Heaven", which was recorded new in '81 for the album, and was recorded in one of only 2 sessions held for the album (Keith and Ronnie both missed this first session, and why Bill got to play electric 6 string guitar, along with synthesizer and bass on “Heaven”.). Two other songs started earlier were also worked on that day, including the great "Waiting on a Friend", which was first recorded back in '73, with MT on lead guitar, but the sax, played by Sonny Rollins, wasn't added on until this '81 album session. Then Keith's ‘Neighbors", recorded in '80 (the music, anyway), had Jagger adding in the vocals to the song on this day. Keith worked some more on the tune in the second session for the LP. A few other songs to make the album were rearranged in '81, but most of the other songs were mainly recorded in the '70s.

The great "Start Me Up", which was first record as a reggae song in 1978, was finished up in '81 at the second session. According to Keith, there was about 50 takes from the '70s of the song, all as a reggae number, along with only one take of it as a rock song, yet that rock take was what would be used when Keith put the final touches on it in the last TY session in '81.

As far as these 2 albums go in the Stones VS album standings, IORR has a 7-5 record and is in 9th place, while TY sits tied in third place at 5-1.

Looking back at last week’s first Stones poll we asked: Rate the Rolling Stones video ”Paint It Black”. Well, it’s nice to know it isn't just me who dislikes this video. A "3" was the top pick (16.5%) in the voting last week, the lowest rating given to a video so far in this still new series. A "4" finished second, just one vote behind, and third place went to an "8" (16.2%), so at least some fans very much do like the video. To see full, final results, go here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 885, poll 1. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the Stones Fans Top Pick List Page 2 , under “Video Ratings”.

Last week at the Stones VS poll, we asked: Voodoo Lounge vs Emotional Rescue , which album do you like the best?

vs

Last week we ran the “I put a Voodoo Spell on You” polls again, and the host LP ended up on top. You can see the final totals from this poll by clicking here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 885, poll 2. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 526, and as usual we’ll vote in 2 polls in this one too. The first question in the Rock Poll this week is: Who was the most underrated member of Jethro Tull's classic lineup?

Jethro Tull was a band that had many different members throughout the years, especially in their later years, but along with one constant member, that being founder Ian Anderson, who officially started the band in December of 1967, a band that really came about around 1964, with a few members from back then who would join the band again in the ‘70s. For this poll, I listed everybody who was in the band officially during their classic timeframe, from 1967 till '80, other than guitarist Tony Iommi, since he was only a member for one week in 1968, be it a very important week in Jethro Tull history (and Stones' history, too, playing for Tull at the Stones’ Rock 'n Roll Circus), but still, he was in the band for only a week… I also didn't list bassist Dave Pegg, who didn't join the band until the close of their classic lineup and the poll’s timeframe. I figured 10 members was enough to vote for anyway, but the band had seen more than 20 official members by the time it broke up in 2014. Future Stone Mick Taylor was almost a member in '68 after guitarist Mick Abrahams left, he was Anderson's pick to replace Abrahams, but MT turned down the offer and Iommi was then hired instead.

Tull had several well-known, big hits that I don't have to tell you about, and they recorded several classically long albums, including the LP Thick as a Brick which was actually one long song - the only song on the entire album, broken up into 2 parts for side one (22:40) and side 2 (21:06).

For this week’s Rock VS poll, the new question is: 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now': Slade's original vs Quiet Riot’s cover, which version is better?

Back in 2013, we pitted these 2 bands up against each other for the Slade original song "Cum On Feel the Noize", so this could be looked at as part 2 in the battle of these 2 bands.

"Mama Weer All Crazee Now" was released and written in 1972 by Slade's lead singer and rhythm guitarist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea; the 2 wrote all of the band's original songs as it were. This one was a big hit in Europe, making it to #1 in the singles chart in the UK and in several other countries, yet, and as usual, it only made it to #76 in the U.S., where they had few fans, other than I and I guess a handful of others.

Quiet Riot in the 1980s had more than one hit covering songs written by Slade (at least 3 that I can recall), and this was one of them. Released in 1984 on the band's album Condition Critical, it would be the very last hit single for the group, peaking at #15 in the U.S.

When I went searching for videos to link to for these songs, I was reading up about Quiet Riot’s lead singer, Kevin DuBrow, and had forgotten that he passed away several years ago from a drug overdose. He sure did have the perfect metal voice, as does Slade's Noddy Holder, who left Slade back in the early '90s, and I understand that he's an actor today in the UK.

Both songs can be heard before you vote, as usual, in the voting booth, Slade's video is a live take, I usually say to go by the studio version when you vote, but Slade back in the day sounded just as good live, so if you don't know their original version, this live take will do fine, or you can look around YouTube for the studio take of the song… More than likely you will remember the Quiet Riot video of this song; it sure was on MTV more than enough back in the day. Just remember, we are not voting on the videos, just the songs, the vids are there just so you can hear the songs before you vote… To vote on this VS question, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: Who was the most underrated member of The Allman Brothers Band's classic lineup? .

In close voting, the late bassist Lamar Williams was chosen with 17.1% of the votes. The man whom Williams replaced in the group after his accidental death, Berry Oakley, tied for second place with keyboardist Chuck Leavell, they both took in 16.8% of the votes each.

You can check out the full, final results from this Rock poll by clicking here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 525. You can also check out the final results at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'I Can't Explain' by The Who vs 'Guns on the Roof' by The Clash which song with the same riff is better?

Talk about a major landside win, one of the biggest ones we’ve seen in the Rock VS poll occurred last week. To see the final results, and Who won, just click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 525. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where it’s week 279, and this week’s new question is: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Revolver

In this series we are picking the least favorite song off each Beatles album. This week the question looks at the great 1966 Revolver album, which was number 1 for 7 straight weeks on the charts, and yes, this psychedelic LP was very far out, to say the least. Now I know it's once again going to be very hard to vote on this question, just like it was hard to pick one least favorite song from the other Beatle albums that we voted on in the past. Just remember, we aren't looking for the worst song here, just the one you like least. That shouldn't be too hard to do….. okay, maybe it will be, but I know you can pick out one song from the 14 listed that you don’t dig as much as the others

We, as usual, will only look at the UK version of this LP, and this one was the very last Beatles album where 2 different versions were released in the UK and U.S. (thank goodness!).

So which song will you pick in this poll? To see the songs from this LP, please use this link: Revolver. To vote in the poll, go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Rubber Soul

Well, finally some good polling numbers for this question, see, it wasn't really that hard to pick a least favorite song from the songs listed. Now true, of the 14 songs listed, only 3 were in play, and the 3 took in 94.7% of all the votes! But we did pick one song out of those and that song was the George Harrison tune "If I Needed Someone", with 31.9% of the votes. To see the full, final results, go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 278. Or, you can check out the results at the Beatles list page for "Songs per LP" , located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well, it’s still the dead of summer and I’m still trying to hang in there with this way too hot weather that we’re having. Is it too hot where you live, too?... As usual, I thank all of you who take part in the voting each week! It sure is a lot of fun seeing how the answers to our 5 different poll questions turn out each week!
