PIB/VL VS EM/Allman Bros/Who VS Clash/Fabs

It’s time to get this week’s 5 weekly polls underway, starting off with the Stones Poll, where we enter week 885 of the poll, and in which we vote on 2 different questions each week. This week's first Stones poll question is: Rate the Rolling Stones video ”Paint It Black”

Week 5 of rating the different videos that the Stones have made in the past. This one came out in 1982 and was written and directed by Robert C. Hughes. It was in his short film/documentary called Wild Rides, and showed several rock videos (so I'm told), made with a theme of people on roller coasters, and the Stones approved of letting Hughes use PIB in the film, so this wasn't their idea, but they did approved it and it was considered an official Stones video release when it came out. I'm not sure who this guy Hughes really was (do you know?), other than he directed and wrote a handful of movies, the last one being in the mid '90s, and most of them were horror movies. In this Stones video for PIB, there are 2 main characters, a very fat and odd, sinister looking man wearing back makeup around his eyes, and a little boy, who seems to be a very happy kid. You got to wonder why his mother, who we only see for a second or 2, would allow him to go on the roller coaster with this very strange man. Anyway, PIB is playing throughout the video, and by now, if you were around in the '80s, then you more than likely remember this video, which was shown often enough on MTV, back in the days when MTV actually showed music videos.

The Stones came out with a second official video for PIB a few years ago, but that one only shows the song's lyrics and nothing more. Anyway, I'm not sure if today this one that we will vote on, is still considered an official Stones video or not, but it was at least in the ‘80s.

This next paragraph is a repeat from last week… Remember when voting that it’s the entire video we are voting on here, and not just the song/music. The video will be linked to from inside the voting booth so you can watch it before you vote. Make sure to take the time to watch the video before you vote, to refresh your memory of it. The link to the video can also be found here in this thread (above)… If you use the link in the poll menu (only), when you click on where the song's title is in the question, you will be sent to YouTube and the video. If you click on anywhere else in the question, that will take you to where you can vote on the question in our voting booth.

So to watch the video and then cast your vote in this first Stones poll question, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The week's second Stones poll will ask this: Voodoo Lounge vs Emotional Rescue , which album do you like the best?

vs

This week we return to the "I Put a Voodoo Spell on You" Poll, which features the 1994 LP Voodoo Lounge, which we last voted on in 2011. Produced by The Glimmer Twins and Don Was, this one is a pretty even album with several very good songs on it, including the hit single "Love Is Strong". It will go up against the 1980 album Emotional Rescue, which received both hot and cold reviews when it came out. ER to me is another one of those "even" albums and it has 2 hit singles on it, the title cut, and "She's So Cold".

As far as these 2 albums go in the standings, VL has a 4-5 record and is in 14th place, while ER sits in 20th place at 1-4.

To see the song list for Voodoo Lounge , go here: VL. To see the song list from Emotional Rescue , go here: ER. To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Stones poll we asked: Rate the Rolling Stones video 'One Hit To the Body'. The final results show that this video is well loved; something that you can’t ever say about the album that it comes from (DW). “9” was the top pick, with 21% of the vote, second place was a “10” at 20.7%, and in third place was a tie with “7” and “8”, at 20.5% each. As you can see, over 80% of the votes went to the top 4 spots. To see full, final results, go here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 884, poll 1. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the Stones Fans Top Pick List Page 2 , under “Video Ratings”.

Last week at the Stones VS poll, we asked: A Bigger Bang vs The Rolling Stones, Now!, which album do you like the best?

vs

Last week we ran the Big Bang Polls, but the host album didn’t end up on top, although the voting was very close. You can see the final totals from this poll by clicking here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 884, poll 2. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 525, and as usual we’ll vote in 2 polls in this one too. The first question in the Rock Poll this week is: Who was the most underrated member of The Allman Brothers Band's classic lineup? We will only cover the lineup of the band during their first run with fame, which ended with their first breakup in 1976. Although the Allman Brothers Band was still a very active and good band after they reformed (several times), we will not look at those other time periods, since it was this first group that was responsible for their best albums and real success.

The band was started by lead and slide guitarist Duane Allman in 1969, along with Dickey Betts (lead and slide guitar), Jai Johanny 'Jaimoe' Johanson (drums), Berry Oakley (bass), and Butch Trucks (drums). Betts and Oakley were at first going to share in singing the vocals, but then Duane, feeling they needed a stronger lead singer, suggest that his kid brother, Gregg, who had played keyboards and guitar with Duane in 2 other bands, would make for an excellent lead singer for this new band. Gregg, who was living a thousand miles away from where the others were, agreed to join them, and so the original members were now in place. The group was then named after the 2 brothers, and their band became an instant success as one of the early jam bands. Then just 2 years later, in 1971, tragedy hit when Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident, and then in the following year, his close friend and bandmate, Berry Oakley, was also killed in a motorcycle accident that took place just 3 blocks from where Duane lost his life. After that, Lamar Williams was hired to replace Oakley on bass, while Chuck Leavell was hired to be the main keyboard player.

This early jam band was also one of the first Southern Rock bands, and later on, after Williams and Leavell joined, they became known as a Country Rock band. That change took place after their only true hit single, "Ramblin' Man", was released. The country like song, which was the last song that Oakley played on before his death, became the Allman Brothers first and only top 10 single, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

To see the poll list and vote, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s Rock VS poll, the new question is: 'I Can't Explain' by The Who vs 'Guns on the Roof' by The Clash which song with the same riff is better?

This week for the first time in a while, we return to what was the original way of asking questions in the VS polls, that being, in just pitting songs up against each other.

"I Can't Explain” by The Who, was the first single released by The Who under that name (and overall their second single). It came out in 1964 and was written by Pete Townshend. It had a very heavy, sharp guitar riff to it (especially for that time) and Pete said that he was influenced by the Kinks when he wrote it. Jimmy Page played rhythm guitar on the song in sessions, this was confirmed by the Who years later, but it isn't clear if his playing made the final cut or not. The tune made it to #8 on the UK Singles Chart.

"Guns on the Roof" was released by the Clash in 1978 on their LP Give 'Em Enough Rope. The title came about from a raid on the band as they were in the studio recording the song, while their drummer and bass player were up on the roof of the building shooting at race pigeons, along with 2 friends, and were reported by locals who heard the guns going off. That brought in the police's armed anti-terrorist squad with weapons drawn, to raid the studio and arrest both bassist Paul Simonon and drummer Topper Headon…. The song itself has the exact same guitar riff as the Who's song, and even starts off the very same way with that same riff, yet Townshend wasn't credited by the Clash for using his riff.

Videos for each song are available in the voting booth (the Who look like little boys in theirs, LOL!). Just remember, we are not voting on the videos, just the songs, the vids are there just so you can hear the songs before you vote… To vote on this VS question, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: What is best rock song with bagpipes in it? . This one was only a race to the end between the 2 top picks, with “Sky Pilot” by Eric Burdon & the Animals taking first by just 4 votes over AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ’n’ Roll)”. These 2 songs took in 71.7% of all of the votes cast. Third place went to “Mull of Kintyre: by Paul McCartney & Wings at 16.7%, and the remaining 15 songs only received 11.3% (combined) of the remaining vote total.

You can check out the full, final results from this Rock poll by clicking here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 524. You can also check out the final results at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: Who lead Fleetwood Mac best: Peter Green vs Bob Welch vs C. McVie/Buckingham/Nicks?

vs vs

The lineup that had the most hits, and which has been together the longest, took first place. To see the final results, just click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 524. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where it’s week 278, and this week’s new question is: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Rubber Soul

This week, and for the first time since 2014, we return to the series where we pick the least favorite song off each Beatle album. I hadn’t come back to this series in a long time, since Beatle fans didn't seem to really like to vote in it, but with a major upswing in votes cast in the Beatle poll each week since the question was last asked, I'm hoping that Fab fans will understand that even the great Beatles had to have a least favorite song per album.

I hadn’t looked at the Beatles list page for "Songs per LP" in ages, and last week when I did, I realize what a cool page it is. But it's still incomplete, since we never finished up on this series of questions as to which song per LP is the least favorite, whereas the most popular songs per LP were finished up in 2013. So it's time to start making picks again for this interesting list page, and just remember, we are not looking for the worst Beatles song per album here, just the least liked (since there really aren’t any "worst songs" to choose from on any Beatles album [at least not recorded by the Beatles, anyway]). So the next up LP to vote on is the great LP Rubber Soul, which was the sixth UK studio album released by the Beatles, coming out on December 3, 1965. FYI, the favorite song voted by fans on this LP was "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)".

Now yes I know, all the songs on this one are either very good or great, but one of them has to be the least favorite. So which songs with that be? To see the songs from this LP, please use this link: Rubber Soul . To vote in the poll, go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: What was your favorite nickname/pseudonym for Richard Starkey?

This was the last week of the "Everybody knew her as Nancy polls. I don’t think that anybody would be surprised to know that his nickname that we all call him, “Ringo Starr” was the landslide pick. To see by how much and how the other names did, you can go here to find out: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 277. Or, you can check out the results at the The Beatles' Beatles Miscellaneous Listings page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well we did well enough at our polls last week number wise, even if it the 4th of July holiday was on Monday. For me last week was a crazy one, as the heat is on where I live, and I hate summer heat, plus I had car trouble that stopped a planned family trip in its tracks. Then my 84 year old neighbor up the road, who also happened to be my son-in- law’s father, died of old age, so I’m happy that last week is now over. As far as the heat goes, I just keep telling myself that the days are getting shorter, so less sun to keep it too hot for too long. One nice thing living so high up is that no matter how hot it gets in the daytime, it cools off nicely each night as soon as the sun goes down, and that cools off the house after a just few hours (nobody around here have any air conditioners, you don’t really need them).

I thank all of you as usual for voting in all 5 of our weekly polls and I hope all of you have a great upcoming week! Stays cool my friends!
