At the time I was stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Sill Oklahoma, a cultural and spiritual black hole of a place if there ever was one.. I walked into a burger joint on base to grab a bite and heard the announcement on the radio news. It was sort of a double -whammy because I had just seen a write-up in Billboard a few days earlier saying that Brian had left the Stones and was being replaced by Mick Taylor. I had seen John Mayall's band with Taylor perform the year before and I knew the Stones were getting a top notch player. But still it was sad having heard that Brian had left and then to hear he was gone at that point didn't seem real at first. Without Brian the band would never be the same gain and it still isn't. The news of the Hyde Park event as a tribute to Brian was well-publicized, and I wished I could have been there instead of the stinkin' army.
