He's better match for KR actually. Impressive as his chops are, MT seemed to come across as almost too good and consequently too distant for the Stones. His tecnically perfect killer-tone solos were superimposed onto a 3-piece rhythm section whose sound might have been a better match for a somewhat less proficient lead player. Not that I would change anything that MT did over the course of 4 studio albums and memorable concert tours / recordings. However, Ronnie fit the bill and the band didn't lose any ground once he came on board.
