Angie/Stones & Fabs VS polls/Band names

This week’s new polls are up and running, and as usual we start off talking about The Stones poll, where we enter week 878 of this weekly poll and for this week we will experiment with the poll by running 2 Stones polls in one week, just like we do at the Rock poll, and like the Rock poll's second poll each week, the Stones extra poll will be a VS poll only, dealing with the long running Stones album VS matchup series. I will do this since in the remaining 2 plus years of the Stones weekly poll, we won't have enough time to match up every album against each other, and this way, we will get to cover many more than we otherwise would. I'll write more about this below when I note what the matchup this week is, but first let's talk about the first, main Stones poll.

Back in March, once in a blue moon Gasser/poster and longtime lurker, Mercy Mercy, wrote me and asked about me running a Stones video poll. We did run such a question many years ago, but Mercy Mercy had put together an interesting list of videos anyway for me to use if I wanted to run it again. But with over 70 videos links on his list (and that wasn't counting all of the Stones official videos out there as it was), I was thinking of doing something different with the cool list he put together (thanks again for the list, MM!).

In the past, I had run only 2 Stones VS polls for songs with more than one official video to them, and so I got to thinking, well, since there are more than just 2 Stones songs with more than one official video, let's ask that for the next few weeks. So with that in mind, this week's first Stones poll question is: The Stones' 'Angie' music video 1 vs 'Angie' music video 2, which video do you dig more?

To be honest, I had forgotten there were 2 different videos made for this song. Video 1 is the better known one, while video 2 is a bit different, placing Mick Taylor on the piano instead of the guitar (although in the studio version of the song, Nicky Hopkins plays the piano). Jagger also losses the funny looking, big hat that he wears in the first video. But both of these vids were filmed on the same day.

Now, here is a total reversal to what I usually note about any VS poll when it comes to the videos linked to the choices in the voting booth. In this case, we aren't rating the song here, but we are rating the videos (only), so you need to watch each video before you vote! I hope you can spare about 10 minutes to do that, you can, right? If you’re a Stones fan, then I know you can!

To watch the videos and then cast your vote in this first Stones poll question, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to both listen to and watch both takes of the song, and then to vote on this question.

The week's second Stones poll will ask this: Exile On Main Street vs Tattoo You, which album do you like the best?

vs

Yes, the second weekly Stones poll will deal with only revisiting the old Stones albums VS series, putting the feature LP up against an LP it never went up against before. Each week will be a different revisited series (there are 15 different ones, so far), and we will just run the second Stones poll each week in this matter. Then about every 6 weeks or so, I'll start a brand new series of VS questions for an album that hasn't been featured yet - as the main poll, and during that timeframe - I'm thinking for its run, that will be the only Stones poll of the week, so it can truly be featured and not complete with an older series running at the same time. But that is subject to change, as I'm just guessing at the moment; let's first see how the poll numbers go with this second poll.

So yes, this week we will revisit the first ever series ever run with this poll question, that being "The Exile Polls". Now although this was the first series for this question - started up the week of January 12, 2009, I had run the Stones VS album poll question a few times before years earlier, just not in a 6 weeks at a time series. EOMS has been polled 11 times, including 6 times in the The Exile Polls series. It has the most wins in the standings so far, at 9, but isn't in first place, as it has 2 losses (to SF and LIB). This week in its return, it will go up against Tattoo You, which is ahead of Exile in the standings at 5-0. But TY, which hasn't had a series of its own yet, hasn't really been placed up against any of the more popular Stones albums, either. Well, not until now anyway. Can this very popular 1981 album of mainly recorded leftover '70s songs, beat out the mighty EOMS? Well we shall see!

To see the song list for Exile On Main Street , go here: Exile On Main Street . To see the song list from Tattoo You , go here: Tattoo You. To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Last week at the Stones poll we asked:Between the Buttons vs 12x5, which album do you like the best?

vs

In the last week (for now) of the Buttons Poll, we had a very close finish, really, it was a close race all week long, and in the end, BTB finally won out against a ‘60s mainly cover album. To see by how much (or little) BTB won, you can check out the final result here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 877. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

At the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 518, and as usual, we’ll vote in 2 polls in this one. The first question in the Rock Poll this week asks: Of the bands named after people who weren't in the group, which name was best?

This is the second week looking at bands that are named after either a band member(s) or a non-band member. This week we look at rock bands that were named after people who weren't in the group. In most cases (but not all), these were people who had passed on already when the band took their name, and most of these people whose names were used, had nothing to do with rock music.

Now, just like with last week’s poll question, you don't have to like a band to vote for them in this poll, since we are going by the band's names only and how the name worked out for the band; so the poll question has nothing to do with their sound.

So IYO, which band listed had the best name? To see the poll list and vote, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s Rock VS poll, the new question is: The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band vs the Stones Their Satanic Majesties Request, which psychedelic LP was better?

vs

Week 3 and for now the last week where we are placing Stones albums up against Beatle albums. Guess we can call this one the battle of the psychedelic albums. Both LPs came out in 1967, the Beatles first, and both had very interesting album covers, very far out indeed, and both covers were shot by the late Michael Cooper, and on both covers, the 2 bands acknowledged each other, with the Beatles having a doll wearing a shirt saying "Welcome the Rolling Stones, Good Guys" on their cover, with the Stones returning the favor with hiding the faces of the 4 Beatles on their album cover. But all that matters with this question when you go to vote… is the music inside each album!

You all know about both of these LPs and what they are about, so I’m not going into any detail here about them. But to refresh your memory of what songs are on each one before you vote, for The Stones LP go here to see the song list, and for the Fabs LP, go here.

Now, which of these 2 LPs is the better psychedelic album? To vote, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: Of the bands named after a band member (or vice versa), which name was best? 7 of the listed bands got the most votes in close voting. The top 3 spots went to 4 bands, with Sly and the Family Stone being named the best band name, with 10.4% of the vote. Alice Cooper (the band) took second place at 10.1%, and a tie for third between Fleetwood Mac and Guns N' Roses, who both received 9.8% of the vote.

You can check out the full, final results from this poll by clicking here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 517.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked:The Beatles debut LP Please Please Me vs the Stones debut LP, The Rolling Stones, which one was better?

vs

I was surprise at how close the final results were, very, very close indeed. Which band took first? To find out, just click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 517. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close this out as usual with the Beatles poll, where it’s week 271, while we enter week 9 of voting on the Let it Be album in the “Beatles albums VS Beatles albums polls”. This week’s question is: Let It Be vs A Hard Day's Night , which album do you like the best?

vs

A Hard Day's Night was the third UK studio album put out by the Beatles, released on July 10, 1964, with side one containing songs from the soundtrack to their film of the same name.

Now before you vote, to see the song list for Let it Be , go here: Let it Be . To see the song list for A Hard Day's Night , go here: A Hard Day's Night. Then to cast your vote in this week’s poll, use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: Let It Be vs Beatles for Sale , which album do you like the best?

vs

Well it was looking all week long like Let It Bewould finally win in this series of questions without having to face Yellow Submarine to do so. But then the weekend came and well, although the final tally was very close, LIB found itself once again on the losing end. Boo to that I say! You can go here to see the final tally: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 270. Or, you can check out the results at the The Beatles' Studio Albums page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well that wraps up the poll post for this week! I thank all of you for your votes in last week’s polls, and don’t forget to vote now in this week’s polls! I do hope that everybody has a great upcoming week!
