RE: RE: Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Guitarists

Agree on most every point. The only list that matters is one's own list, and it is defensible as any other. I for one would not include a minimalist such as Johnny Ramone or a derivative 3-chord jangler like Peter Buck, who compliment their bands well but do not advance the art and science of rock guitar to any great extent. Others would no doubt disagree with my selections. Springsteen for one can be a jaw-dropping guitarist when he wants to be, although he does not appear to seek out that role for himself and typically holds back in favor of the song. Or perhaps better stated in favor of how the lead guitar fits into his band as a whole and not as the main focus. I saw him perform in the late 70's and recall that he was on fire and literally off the reservation with a couple of extended solos, particularly "Kitty's Back". He's also generous in sharing instrumental solo spots with others in the E Street Band. So perhaps ego or a lack thereof is another way of how musical perceptions are arrived at.
