TSMR vs ER/Van Halen/Abbey Road

First, I’m sorry that the links to our new polls went up so late tonight, and also that this week’s poll post is also being post so late, too…. But I was preoccupied tonight, and although I had planned to write up this poll post earlier today so it would be ready to post when I did first get to the computer (knowing that my night would be long), I never did get around to doing that.

But week 851 of the Stones poll is here, and this week we ask this question: Their Satanic Majesties Request vs Emotional Rescue, which album do you like the best?

vs

Yes, this week we return to the Stones album’s VS polls, the series of questions that lead to our Rock VS polls many many moons ago. Since I usually run these series of questions for 5 to 6 weeks at a time, this new series will take us to the year's end for the Stones poll. This time around we feature the album, Their Satanic Majesties Request, and I’ll call this the "Satanic polls". Perhaps this isn’t the greatest title to use around this time of the year, but heck, next week is the anniversary of this LP's release, and if it was cool for the Stones to name their 1967 Xmas release as they did, then it's cool enough for me to name the poll series after the album.

Their Satanic Majesties Request got terrible reviews when it came out; the very first Stones album to see such reviews. Among other things, many felt the Stones were totally copying the Beatles and their LP Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It had the same type of far out looking cover as the Beatles LP (including the Beatles faces hidden on the cover, in the flowers), and really the same kind of far-out hippy psychedelic music, music that wasn't really the Stones style. Yet most Stones fans (but not all) liked the LP very much anyway, and as the years went by, the more the album would be loved. Brian Jones was one of the main reasons the LP was so good, and this would be the last time you could say that about Brian and his work with the Stones (not to take anything away from his work on the next LP Beggars Banquet). Yet the thing was, Brian hated the album’s sound and direction, as did the rest of the band, and as you know, the Stones would return to their roots soon after with the release of "Jumpin' Jack Flash", and then Beggars Banquet.

This LP goes up against Emotional Rescue in its first round. ER was released in 1980, and it topped the charts in both the US and UK. The LP had a disco feel to it, which turned off many Stones fans, but not me (and yet I hate disco). Both the title cut and "She's So Cold" were big hits. Several of the non-disco songs recorded for this album and not used, would later show up on the Tattoo You album.

Okay, so are you ready to vote? To make your pick between the 2 LPs, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll to vote.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Mick Jagger vs Keith Richards, from 1962 till present, who contributed more to the Stones? I must say, most of the time, even if I disagree with the final results, I can usually understand the why those results took place. But I’m blown away by what choice was picked first to this question last week. While I was somewhat surprised that Keith was picked by a mere 4% of the voters (I would have expected something more like 25%), the fact that MJ wasn’t picked first in this poll was just so unexpected! How could he not been picked first? He was ahead most of the week, but only by a vote or 2, and in the end, the choice I don’t like to even include in our polls (but still feel it worked well in this series of questions), that the 2 were even, was the top choice! Really? I couldn’t disagree more, but this is why we have these polls in the first place, as none of us can be 100% sure what the top pick will be after the voting is over.

To see the finial totals to this poll, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 850 . I’ll also add the results of this poll to the Stones VS Page 2. Just click on “Band Members” when you get to this page to see the results.

Now to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 493, and I've decided to hold off on returning to the VS polls this week and will wait until after the New Year to do so. But it’s not because of a lack of questions; in fact I had a new question ready to go for this week. I just need a break from running all of these polls each week, and one less poll means a bit less work for me. Also, this is a good time for a break, in part since we are running VS polls on both the Stones and Beatles polls right now. So for this week's lone Rock Poll, we will return to the series of questions where we look for the most underrated member of different rock bands, with that noted, this week's question is: Who was the most underrated member of Van Halen?

A band that started out and first called Mammoth, they were formed by brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen, with Eddie at first the band’s lead singer. Then they hired David Lee Roth in 1974 to be the lead singer, and they changed their name to Van Halen at that same time. Michael Anthony also joined them on bass in '74, and that lineup made it big and would last until 1985, when Eddie and David had a falling out and David was fired. Solo guitarist and the former lead singer of the band Montrose, Sammy Hagar, was hired to replace him, but he wasn't allowed to play guitar on the early albums, as he was there to sing only (but he did add guitar when they played lived). With Sammy, VH grew even bigger and continued putting out more big hits without missing a beat. Sammy lasted in the band until 1996, when Eddie fired him out of the blue - for pretty much no reason other than he was getting to be too well liked in the group by fans. Gary Cherone took over lead vocals for VH after that, and he lasted until 1999 when the band for the most part broke up. Eddie was by then fighting cancer and things weren't looking too good for him health wise, but he did manage to beat the big C in the end and VH came back to life in '03, with Sammy hired back again on lead vocals. That lasted for the next 2 years. After that Sammy and Eddie had their problems again, and Sammy was once again fired, and David returned to sing lead, all this while Eddie also got mad at Michael and fired him from the band, replacing him on bass 2 years later with his teenage son Wolfgang, who had never played in any band before. That is how VH’s lineup still is today.

So with this poll we look at every member of the band and decide who the most underrated member in it was. To make your pick and vote, just click here: Classic Rock Poll.

In last week’s Rock poll we asked: Of the Rockers listed, who would you like to (or would have liked to) invite over for Thanksgiving dinner the most? Gosh did lead guitarists do poorly in this poll, guess nobody wants them over for dinner!! Yes, only 4 of them ended up getting a good number of votes out of the top 18 spots that saw around 80% of the votes. But with that noted, the one person most of us would like to have over for Thanksgiving dinner, was a lead guitarist - named Neil Young. Maybe that’s because he’s also a hippie, as hippies make for great Thanksgiving guests, right? I don’t really know for sure, but even a silly question like this one was fun to ask and run, and find out just who we normal fans would like to have over for dinner on this special holiday.

You can check out the full final results of this poll by clicking on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 492.

We end this poll post as usual with the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 246, and the new question is: Abbey Road side 1 vs Abbey Road side 2, which side to you like better??

A few weeks ago we noted here about the 2 very different sides to the masterpiece LP Abbey Road, and how side 1 was the side John Lennon preferred, as it was a pure, traditional rock n roll side and nothing more. Side 2 was the concept /connected side of short songs, which Paul McCartney preferred. So we have 2 totally different sides that combined made up perhaps the greatest rock album ever made or heard.

So one could say that both sides were equally great, since they worked great together to make this masterpiece album. Yes, that can be said… but…. In this poll you can only vote for either side 1, or side 2, that's it. It would be easy to add into the choices for this poll a third choice like "I like both sides the same" but we want to learn something here, and with that choice we don't learn anything new at all. We already know that fans like both sides, but you got to choose just one side here as your favorite, which won't be easy for some of us to do. But this question is looking to find out how we feel about your regular rock songs, verses songs that have a concept or other kinds of connection to them. That’s what we’re looking for in this poll!

In case you wish to see the list of songs on each side of this album, you can do so on this page that I totally forgot I put together 2011: The Beatle album sides.

Okay, to vote for the side of Abbey Road that you like more, please use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate the album Hey Jude (aka The Beatles Again)?

We asked a Beatle bonus album poll question last week about this compilation album, and in the end, it did as well as all the other Beatle albums did, with 93.7% of the votes going to spots 8 thru 10.

To see what the top pick was, and to see the full final results from the poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 245. Or, you can check out all of the Beatle album top ratings at the Beatles Album Page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

As usual, I like to close this post out with a big “Thank You” to all who take part in the voting in our polls, especially with last week being a major holiday week. I’m happy nobody took off from voting, as our vote tallies weren’t down at all! Holiday weeks really don’t affect our poll numbers anymore, other than maybe Xmas week when we still see a slight drop off, but maybe that won’t happen this year? We will soon find out!

I hope all of you have a great upcoming week!
