MJ VS BJ/Acoustic players/Signs/AR

Tonight we enter week 848 of the Stones poll and ask this question: Mick Jagger vs Brian Jones, from 1962 to 1965, who contributed more to the Stones?

vs.

Week 8 of this Stones VS question; the fifth week Mick J is featured in this question and the second week for Brian. So this week its "Jagger vs Jones" and we will only look at the years noted in the question, since after '65, although BJ was still a main contributor to the Stones, he flat out wasn't any more in any leadership role in the band as MJ was, therefor no need to ask for the years after '65, since in this week's question we aren't just placing 2 members who had equal parts in the band, in this case one was a guitarist and multiple instrumentalists, and the other the lead singer who (in the ‘60s) didn’t play instruments other than harp and a bit of percussion, which makes comparing them not too easy and not really worth asking. So after '65 I don't see any need to ask the question between these 2, as their roles in the band were very different after that point. This is the same reason why Charlie and Bill aren't in any of these questions, as there isn't any need for them to be placed up against MJ ever, as with them too, they had different roles in the band that we just don't need to compared.

Now that isn’t to say that when we compare BJ and MJ up until ’65, that we don’t need to look at everything they did in the band, we do, from image, to what instruments the 2 played, and also writing, singing and leadership. So who between the two contributed more to the band during this early time frame? To make your pick, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll to vote.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Keith Richards vs Brian Jones, from 1962 to 1969, who contributed more to the Stones? Brian came out on top by a wide margin. To see by how much, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 847 . I’ll also add the results of this poll to the new Stones VS Page 2. Just click on “Band Members” when you get to this page to see the results.

Now to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 490, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first, regular poll, we will ask a new question which is: Who was/is the best Acoustic Guitar player in rock? (Part 4 of 4)

We enter the final part of this interesting question and I must say, we did a fantastic job in picking the best acoustic guitar players in Parts 1 thru 3! We ended up with a total of 29 guitarists to choose from for this week. To see the final list and to vote in this week’s first rock poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s VS poll we will ask this question: 'Signs': Five Man Electrical Band's original vs Tesla’s original, which version is better?

"Signs" was written by Les Emmerson, who was, well still is, the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Canadian rock band Five Man Electrical Band (even if today there's 6 of 'em), who started out calling themselves "The Staccatos" in 1963. This song, released first on their LP Good-byes and Butterflies, and also as a B side single in 1970, was then reissued as a A side single the following year and became their biggest hit, reaching #4 in Canada, #3 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it did even better in Australia, hitting #1 and staying there for 2 months! Yet I'm not sure if this song was ever a big hit in Europe or not (I couldn’t find any info for it on line with the limited time I had, perhaps our Gassers from over there could tell us?). This song is remembered most for its opening lyric "And the sign said 'Long-haired freaky people need not apply'". With that lyric, it's funny that although the band at the time was a long harried band, they weren't too freaky looking, and it wasn't until 20 years later that it was covered and sung by a more long-haired and freakier looking band named Telsa.

Tesla is a hard rock/heavy metal band. They do make the list of a classic rock group since they did start out in 1981 (for me, I usually stop calling bands that came out after 1986 or so “classic rock”). Yet their hit cover of "Signs" was by no means heavy metal or even hard rock, either, as it was recorded live with acoustic instruments only, and the song appeared on their acoustic only album, Five Man Acoustical Jam. You must hand it to Tesla for taking a song not known as being an acoustic number and a band not known for playing acoustic music, to do just that live and at the same time score a top 10 hit with the song (it reached #8 on the charts). The band did release a studio version of the song in 2007 (which I don't think I've ever heard) and on that take they used the song's original lyrics. In their live cover they did changed the lyrics on two lines: "blockin' out the scenery" to "fuckin' up the scenery," and "made up my own little sign" was changed to "made up my own fuckin' sign".

As usual, there are YouTube links to the 2 songs so you can listen to them before you vote, in case you don’t know either version. Just remember, we aren’t rating the video in this poll, only the songs! To vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Who was/is the best Acoustic Guitar player in rock? (Part 3 of 4) We had 10 choices make it into the Part 4 from Part 3, here they are: Keith Richards (10.2%), Jimmy Page (9.8%), David Gilmour (9.1%), Bob Dylan (5.9%), Paul McCartney (5.8%), Ray Davies (5.4%), Roger McGuinn (5.4%), Robbie Robertson (5.3%), Denny Lane ( 5.1%), and Eric Clapton (5.1%).

You can check out the full final results by clicking on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 489.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked:'Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo': Johnny Winter's original vs Rick Derringer’s original, which version is better? Hard to believe, but I picked the one that came out on top for once! Just click here to see the final results: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 489. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

As usual, we end this poll post with the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 243 and week 12 of rating the Beatle albums. So the question is: On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate the album Abbey Road?

As you can now see, we are not asking this series of questions about the Beatles' albums in the order they were recorded, but in the order in which they were released, as Abbey Road was their last recorded LP, but we haven't yet gotten to Let It Be, which was made before AR but released after it.

Abbey Road was the 11th studio album by the Beatles, released on September 26, 1969 in the UK and on October 1, 1969 in the US. Again, this was it for the great Beatles as far as recording music together as a band went. The LP contained 17 tracks, with side 1 your normal kind of side of a rock album, and side 2 called the "connected side", or what some called the concept side of a non-concept album. Guess I should note that officially there were actually only officially 16 tracks on the album when it was released, along with one "hidden track" on side 2, that being "Her Majesty", although today the track is now clearly listed on the CD version of the album as the 17th track and not hidden at all.

Funny that some look at side 1 - and even call it "Lennon's side" while calling side 2 "McCartney's side", when the truth is that Lennon has more of his songs and sings the lead more times on side 2, than on side one. The reason why some say this is because Lennon preferred normal rock albums, whereas Paul (at the time anyway) preferred the concept album approach, so producer Georg Martin, to please both of them, cut the album in 2 to make them both happy. With that aside, Paul still had more written songs on this LP, his 7 to Lennon's 6, with George writing and singing the lead on 2 songs, and Ringo writing and singing lead on one song.

You can view all the songs that appear on the album before you vote here. However, if you go to this page, you should just read the song list and don’t pay any attention to my review of the songs and album, since you need to make your own judgement on this LP when you go to vote.

Okay, to vote and rate Abbey Road , please use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered 2 poll questions. The first one was: On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate Side 1 (only) of the album Yellow Submarine? and the second poll question was: On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate the album Yellow Submarine (entire LP)?

I noted last week that this album to Beatle fans is a lot like how Stones fans react to Dirty Work, but now after the final votes have come in, maybe that’s not totally the case, but still, YS by far saw the lowest ratings yet for a Beatles album, including even when we only voted on the Beatle songs that were on side one. In that first question, the LP’s top pick was a “7”, and in the second poll when we included the non-Beatle songs on side 2, the rating dropped down to a “6”. Still a lot better than what Stones fans rated DW, but not a great rating for a Beatles album, too.

You can check out the full final results from both polls here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 242, poll 1, and here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 242, poll 2. Or, you can check out the top picks at the Beatles Album Page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well winter like weather has finally made its way to Colorado, yet I understand most of the eastern half of the US and Canada has been on the warm side. But as usual (for me anyway), it just seems hard to believe the end of yet another year is almost here!

I thank all of you who voted in all of this week's, and last week’s polls! I do hope all of you have a great upcoming week!
