I'll concede that DST is unnatural. But so is standard! So are time zones! So are work schedules! And so is everything else in our messed-up lives! It is simply who prefers light in the morning vs. who prefers it in the evening. Politics and business are relatively irrelevant, I think, although they are invoked a lot.
Keno, you're right about the Colorado's ski industry's stance on this, but only half-right on the main reason. Resorts have things they need to do before they can open, and so on DST they would pretty much have to change their hours from 9-4 to 10-5 in Dec. and Jan. It is simply a work-schedule/operational preference (because people like their evenings, right?) and has less to do with actual revenue from numbers of skiers in the morning or afternoon. Likewise, safety of kids travelling in the dark to/from school is probably not the utmost reason for that argument, it's more that teachers' and parents' just really wouldn't want their work schedules impacted because of what they're used to.
Hey, how about we meet in the middle, each side giving the other a half-hour, and make it permanent!? Then we could all at least not have to deal with the fall/spring weeklong disruptions! (never mind you, pluto:))
