The move to France was tax-related. At the time in the UK the marginal tax rate on the highest incomes was astronomical. I've read various figures, some of which were in the 90% range (major ouch!) So maybe "Exile on Main Street" should really have been called "Tax Exile on Main Street"...

Think of her what you want, but it was Margaret Thatcher who decided that 50 (or whatever) percent of something was always going to be more than 90 (or whatever) percent of nothing, and brought the marginal tax rate back down to a more reasonable level.
