Keith is one of my favorite musicians, but I find some of his narrow-minded views on music to be bewildering....
1) I have seen the Beatles Shea Stadium show many times, and I thought they were remarkably together when you consider that they couldn't even hear themselves playing! Garth Brooks has said its one of the greatest musical performances in the history of rock/pop music. The Beatles, unlike the Stones, never had the advantage of playing with on stage monitors or legitimate PA systems. It's highly doubtful that the Stones (or any band) could've been any more "together" and "in sync" than the Beatles were that night given the technical limitations of that era and how insane the Beatles fans were with their screaming.
2) If Keith doesn't prefer heavy metal music, just say so, but Black Sabbath isn't a joke. They are probably one of the five most influential groups of the past 50 years in that they invented an entire genre of music. You don't influence that many musicians by playing music that just
"thuds away." Bill Ward was a jazz influenced drummer who loved swing music, and despite the heavy riffs, a lot of Sabbath music does swing. Sabbath played in all sorts of time signatures including waltz time. There is lift in their music, and a lot of musical changes.
3) Rock music is more than just 4/4 time signatures, Chuck Berry riffs and lyrics about cars and chicks. It can be about that, but it is about, more than anything, musical freedom. I have just never understood why Keith has to slam music he doesn't prefer to listen to when it is obvious that so much of the music he denigrates has endured and has influenced thousands of musicians.
