SW/SG/TSMR/Singing Drummers/Drug abuse songs/Fabs

vs.

It’s time to start up week 838 of our Stones poll and we continue with another week of the Stones albums VS poll, with week 5 of the Wheels of Steel poll. This week’s question and matchup is:Steel Wheels vs Some Girls , which album do you like the best?

Although Some Girls was featured in all of the early series of the Stones VS questions, it hasn't been voted on here since 2010. It also doesn't have the greatest record in our poll standings since it went up against all of the Big 4, losing to all of them and then winning big in its last 2 rounds against GHS and DW. So it's time to bring this 1978 released back for another go (and more than likely it will be featured in the next round of this question/series).

No question that Some Girls is looked at by many fans as the last great Stones album, and the best LP made with Ron Wood, and he does shine on this one! I don't have to say too much more about this great album, you all know it well enough, but just one note, when voting, do not consider the bonus songs that were released in 2011 when you put this LP up against Steel Wheels, only compare what was released in '78, since the Stones haven't released any bonus songs for Steel Wheels yet, that, and it's better we only go with what was first released by the band, anyway.

So are you ready to make your pick for which album that you love more? To vote, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll.

vs.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked:Steel Wheels vs Their Satanic Majesties Request , which album do you like the best?

Their Satanic Majesties Request won this one by a landslide. I guess when Steel Wheels loses one of these polls, it always loses big (and its one win was big, too). Got to find an album for week 6 of this poll that SW will have a more even match-up against, as I got a feeling this week’s poll… won’t see that.

To see by how by much of a landslide TSMR won by, all you gotta do is click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 837 . I’ll also add the results of this poll to the Stones VS Page, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 480, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first, regular poll, we will ask: Who was/is the best Vocalist out of the singing Rock drummers?

There are very few drummers around who play their drums and sing at the very same time, as it isn’t an easy task to keep a beat on the drums while singing. But a handful of drummers never seemed to have a problem doing this. Yet I could only come up with 26 rock drummers who sang enough to be considered true "singing drummers". To make the list, the rocker had to do both at the same time. Plus you won't see part time drummers like Paul McCartney listed in this poll either, drumming has to be a FT thing to be listed. Plus yes, the main thing we are looking for here is the best singer out of the 26 drummers, it don’t matter how great they drum, we aren’t looking for the best rock drummer, as we already ran that question 7 years ago (and Keith Moon was picked).

To vote in this week’s first rock poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s VS poll, we ask: ' Medicine Jar' by Wings vs 'That Smell' by Lynyrd Skynyrd, which song about drug abuse is better?

This is the second week in a row a Paul McCartney and Wings song is being featured. I didn't plan on using this VS poll question this week, but had it already set up to go as I wasn't sure if I was going to use it in last week's poll, but instead went with "Live and Let Die" to finish out our former Beatles VS questions. But then this past weekend came around way too fast and although I have a ton of questions I plan to use in future VS polls, I didn't have any set up and ready to be publish except this one, and since I also had to work on the other 3 weekly polls, I saw no crime in running another Paul related question again. The thing is, this one shouldn't even count as another solo Paul song since although this is his band, and he plays bass on the song, he didn't write the song or sing on it (rare in Wings, as this was the first song another member of Wings sang lead on). "Medicine Jar" was co-written and sung by Wings' lead guitarist Jimmy McCulloch. An anti-drug song, it's sad that Jimmy didn't take his own advice and keep his own hands out of the medicine jar, as he would die young, at age 26, of a drug overdose just 4 years later. The song was released in 1975 on Wing's Venus and Mars album.

"That Smell" is a 1977 song released by Lynyrd Skynyrd and written by Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins, it’s on the album Street Survivors. This was another anti-drug song, written when the band members were drinking and doing too many drugs, which in turn was affecting their performances and everyday life. The line "oak tree you're in my way" was about a car accident Collins had one night when he totaled his brand new car after hitting an oak tree while driving drunk and stoned. Ronnie was inspired to write the song after that.

Besides both songs featured this week being anti-drug songs, there were other similarities with these 2 involving the dark lyrics and the singers deaths soon after. With "Medicine Jar", Jimmy McCulloch sang "Dead on your feet, you won't get far, if you keep on sticking your hand in the medicine jar", and then as already noted, he would die from a drug overdose. Ronnie Van Zant sang "Tomorrow might not be here for you", and "The smell of death surrounds you", in "That Smell", and 3 days after the song's released, he would be killed in a plane crash. Erie indeed!

BTW, as usual videos for both songs can be viewed in the voting booth and both are live versions, but you should vote by going by the studio versions only, which I assume all of you know already. I just linked to the live cuts of these songs instead since they are both very good and sound real close to the studio versions anyway, plus as I like to also note here, we never vote on the videos anyway.

So which of these 2 songs do you like more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Who was the most underrated member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? A close vote in this one, at least between all of the original Heartbreakers, as they took in 97% of all of the votes. Keyboardist Benmont Tench took first place by just 2 votes over lead guitarist Mike Campbell.

Tom Petty got a lot of votes in this poll (only 9 off the lead), the most seen by a band leader in this series of poll questions. To see the full, final results from this poll, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 479. Or you can check out the list of each person selected from all of the other bands that we already voted on at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: ‘Live and Let Die': Paul McCartney's original vs Guns N' Roses’s cover, which version is better? The last week of this series of questions for the solo Beatles, and Paul’s original take of this song came out on top.

In 3 of the 4 weeks we ran this solo Beatles question, the solo Fab won. Hard to believe that Lennon would be the only one to not come out on top, as he does in just about every other poll we have ever ran here!

To see the final totals from this poll, just click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 479. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Now finally on to the Beatles’ poll, where we enter week 233, and the new poll question asks: On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate the album With the Beatles?

Week 2 asking this question about Beatle albums. With the Beatles was the second studio album by the Beatles and was released on November 22, 1963 in the UK, eight months to the day after Please Please Me, and it was an instant hit. Yet no singles were taken from it. Why? Who knowns? 8 of the 14 songs were originals, and once again, Lennon sang lead the most on the LP.

This album became the first Beatles album released in North America when it was released in Canada on November 25 '63 under the title Beatlemania! With the Beatles (the first US Beatles album Meet the Beatles wasn't released until January 20, 1964 and contained songs from the first 2 UK albums).

The LP remained at the top of the charts in the UK for 21 weeks, displacing Please Please Me, and with that, the Beatles would occupied the #1 spot for 51 consecutive weeks!.. To see the song list for this album, go here: With the Beatles.

To rate the second Beatle album, please use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question On a scale from zero to ten, how do you rate the album Please Please Me?

In the first week of asking this question, Please Please Me did very well, with rating spots 7 thru 10 taking 98.3% of the votes! The top pick was to give the album an “8”, with 25.1% of the vote.

You can check out the full final results here: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 232. Or, you can check out the top pick at the Beatles Album Page , located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well, on Tuesday September will already be here. But Labor Day will get here late this year, not for another full week, so guess that officially extends summer a little longer for some people. I’m still seeing a lot of tourists here in town, it was a busy summer season for our town for sure this year, and almost no hot days at all, and that I do love!.... As usual, thanks to all of you who voted in all four of our weekly polls last week, and also for voting in this week’s 4 polls, too! I hope all of you have a great upcoming week!
