Wheels of Steel/Dead/BOD/Fabs

vs.

Week 835 of our Stones poll is here and we’ll ask this question:Steel Wheels vs Tattoo You, which album do you like the best?

This is the second week of the "Wheels of Steel" poll and SW will this week go up against Tattoo You,which came out in 1981, although only one true recording session was held, in October, 1980 (new song wise) for the LP, when the song "Heaven" was put together. It became the only Stones song where bassist Bill Wyman was ever allowed to play 6 string guitar on, since Keith Richards never showed up to work on the day it was recorded and he doesn't appear on the tune (Jagger also plays guitar on the song). All of the other songs were taken from unreleased, forgotten songs, with just a little bit of touching up done to a few of them in other sessions held in late 1980. "Waiting on a Friend", recorded back in 1970 and never used, was one of those retouched songs, with Sonny Rollins' great sax added in at that time. It was believed that one other new song, "Neighbors" was also recorded in 1980 for this album, but in an interview a couple of years ago, Richards noted that the song was actually worked on a couple of years earlier and only finished up in late '80. Two songs on the album go back to the Mick Taylor days, the already noted "Waiting on a Friend", and "Tops", making this the only Stones studio LP to feature new songs with both Ron Wood and Taylor on it, even if the 2 didn't play together on any of the songs.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked:Steel Wheels vs Aftermath, which album do you like the best? I kinda figured which album would win this poll beforehand, but I had no clue that a landslide would take place; especially one of such proportion. Aftermath ended up seeing the 6th highest winning percentage ever (96.3%) for these Stones VS polls.

You can check out the final results using this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 834 . I’ll also add the results of this poll to the Stones VS Page, where at the top of the page you can check out the standings on how each album as done in these long running VS polls.

At the Classic Rock Poll, its week 477, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we will ask this: Who was the most underrated member of the Grateful Dead?

Now here was a band that was very even as far as their musicianship went (other than their leader), and although most of us think of Jerry Garcia as their true leader and main man (and he really was), he hated to be called that, as he looked at everybody in the group as his equal.

The Dead started up in San Francisco, officially in 1965. At first, in '64, they were a bluegrass band called the "Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions" and they featured Garcia on banjo and guitar, along with second guitarist Bob Weir, and keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, and they grew out from there. A very interesting story came about from there, and you can read up on them at my Classic Rock site's Dead Bio Page .

This week I'll get back to listing all of the official members of the band for this poll. I wasn't sure at first if I should include Bruce Hornsby on the list, but I guess he was never considered an official band member, even if he played with them on and off for several years. But he didn’t go into the Rock Hall with the rest of the band since he wasn't ever an official member, so he won't be listed in the poll’s choices.

So now it’s time to vote, to do so in this week’s first rock poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s VS poll, we ask: 'Beware of Darkness': George Harrison's original vs Leon Russell’s cover, which version is better? Although I didn't plan it this way, I guess we're in our second week of a solo Beatles VS poll series of questions, as we vote on the George Harrison’s original, going up against the Leon Russell cover of this excellent song.

"Beware of Darkness" was written by Harrison and originally released on his 1970 solo triple album All Things Must Pass. The song includes Harrison's former bandmate Ringo Starr on drums. The tune is about and warns against permitting false illusions from getting in the way of one's true purpose in life, and warns people not to fall for things that are not real in life, including false gods (with the lyric "Beware of Mayra" ), yet the song is still a spiritual one, and covers things he learned from the Hare Krishna temple (kind of funny in a way, since that is one religion that many nonbelievers feel is about a false god).

Russell recorded his version of "Beware of Darkness" for his 1971 album Leon Russell and the Shelter People, and it also showed up on more than one of his greatest hits albums, too. The late Carl Radle played the bass guitar on not only this cover version, but on Harrison’s original, and then again when Harrison and Russell performed the song together at the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, with Harrison singing the lead to the first 2 verses, and then Russel taking over lead vocals for the third verse.

So which version of this song do you dig more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Who was the most underrated member of Aerosmith? Guitarist Brad Whitford turns out to be the answer to this question, as he received 37.5% of the votes.

To see the full, final results from this poll, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 476. Or you can check out the list of each person selected from all of the other bands that we already voted on at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'You’re Sixteen ': Johnny Burnette's cover vs Ringo Starr’s cover, which version is better? Well not only do the Beatles do well in these VS polls, but I see that solo Beatles also do good, as Ringo raked up a win last week with this question.

Now we’ll move on over to the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 230, and the new poll question will ask this: What is the best falsetto in a Beatle song? We asked this question in the Stones poll years ago, then not too long ago in the Rock poll, but never in the Beatles poll.

The Beatles never had a lot of falsetto songs, but then again, they did, theirs was just different than what we would hear from other rockers, like, say Mick Jagger. The Beatles falsetto was for the most part very brief on most of their songs, usually only one or two words in a song would be sung in falsetto, but usually that would be it.

I know my Beatles real good, and when I put their polls together, I usually don’t have to search for any of the answers I'll use, but not for this one. It was hard trying to remember which of their songs did contain some falsetto, other than a handful that I could think of. So last week I went searching and found a lot of songs, and often I had to think to myself, yeah, there is just a bit of falsetto in that one! I also found one web board that had a long thread on it where fans were having a heated discussion on if there is falsetto sung in 'I Want to Hold Your Hand', with several fans flat out claiming that no, there wasn't any. I must admit this song didn’t come to mind before I went searching for tunes to list, but once I thought it over, no question, there is just a bit of falsetto in the song, how can you not hear it? Yes it's brief, and sung on only two words throughout the song, that being "hand" (after "I wanna hold your...") and "hide" (after "I can’t..."). I guess some don't know what falsetto really is, too, as after my search, I had to play many of the songs that I came across, with fans claiming they had falsetto in them, when I couldn't recall any in them. Playing different Beatle songs to check out if falsetto was sung in them or not is the kind of work I don’t mind doing, and after I was done, I had to take several songs off the list that shouldn’t been listed, more than 10 of them. "Across the Universe" was one of them. The first version released of the song, the single, if you recall, has 2 women singing backing vocals in a very high pitch, but when females sing in that matter, it isn't called or considered being falsetto, as it's called "falsetto" only when males sing in that matter.

No question when I got the list completed, I realized that the Fabs were the kings of the brief falsetto in songs, with usually only a word or 2 being sung in this matter, or perhaps just one line. Really, only one Beatle song, "Baby You're A Rich Man", would be more of a true falsetto song where falsetto is heard throughout most of the song, but even on that one, it isn’t a strong falsetto, either.

To vote in this week’s interesting Beatles poll and make your pick, please use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles we asked What is the best false ending to a Beatles song? The song I picked, “Helter Skelter”, was the one that most other fans picked too, with it coming in first with 20.9% of the vote.

To see how the other songs did in the voting, you can check out the final results here: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 229. Or, you can check out the top pick at the Favorite Beatles Songs page located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Thanks to all of you who voted in all of this week's and last week's polls!
