RE: RE: Several replies in one!

We weren't talking about Aftermath. We were strictly Between the Buttons and Satanic Majesties. But we can throw in Aftermath if you like. Of those three albums, Aftermath is head and shoulders the best. Now, I realize that all those records were essentially Brian Jones solo albums in that he wrote and performed everything on them and Keith Richards was occupied elsewhere.

Oh, no - sorry. Keith wrote or co-wrote all those songs. Now I realize the Jagger-Richards stronghold on credits, but you're being disingenuous if you say Keith was barely involved in those records.

I really couldn't care less if everyone likes Sgt. Pepper. I think it blows and I've always thought it blows. I'd think by now you know me well enough that if 99% of the people like something that I don't like, it won't change my mind. Most people like Led Zeppelin and I think they suck, too.

I do find it interesting that the "integrity" of the history of The Stones is something that's supposed to be sacred. Especially where Brian is concerned. Now I'd bet Keith finds it amusing to piss people off by saying Stu formed the band. I don't know why he said what he did, but I think Brian Jones lives much more in the lives of people that never met him than he does in the people that knew him well these days. Again I'll say, let's not forget that Mick and Keith were already in Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys and performing together occasionally for Alexis Korner's gigs. Mick and Keith have every right to claim they're founding members of The Stones.

I don't just "defend" Keith. He doesn't need the help from me. He's proved he can be not just successful, but as successful as you can possibly get with two other guys not named Brian in the second guitar spot in The Stones. When you diminish his contributions, you really just ignore the evidence that's readily available and easy to listen to. I generally "defend" Keith against the Mick Taylor fans that think Mick T. was essentially The Stones after Brian left. During the Ronnie years I've had to "defend" Ronnie because that second guitar player spot goes from being the most vital and under appreciated position in the band to being a hack that's preventing Mick Taylor from reinventing Rock Music.

Brian brought a lot to the table with The Stones, but he just wasn't the main font of musical inspiration and creativity once the band started relying on Mick and Keith to write the songs. He was brilliant at choosing obscure songs to cover or adding marimbas or accordion to a song that may have been more ordinary without it. Not saying that Brian was the greatest thing that ever happened doesn't mean you can't appreciate his contributions.
