Keith has a very big blabbermouth which he should keep shut a lot more often and let his guitar do the talking for him instead. He talks about having to live with his image from 25 years ago but it seems to me that he bought into his own image decades ago and that he's the one who won't let go of it. He just keeps feeding it to the press.
On May 2, 1962, Brian placed an ad in a magazine called "Jazz News" asking for musicians to form a band. It read:
RHYTHM AND BLUES
Guitarist and Vocalist forming R. & B. Band, require Harmonica and/or Tenor Sax, Piano, Bass, and Drums. Must be keen to rehearse. Plenty of interesting work available.
The ad is pictured in Bill's coffee-table book "Rolling With the Stones" (page 34, bottom right.)
So clearly Ian responded to the ad placed by Brian, thus making him the second (not first) member of Brian's band. And Keith is full of shit when he says otherwise.
Both Brian and Keith got themselves too deeply into drugs and became liabilities. The major difference between the two is that Keith received support from his bandmates. Maybe he should show a little grace and remember that, rather than constantly put down a man who is no longer here to defend himself.
Because, ultimately, we always hear the same side of the story. Were Brian still with us, it would be interesting to hear what portrait he would paint of Keith in those days. And it would be interesting to hear if Keith would still be saying all those nasty things about Brian or if he would be a little more selective in his "memories"(!)
