Actually it started when he began to give interviews to promote Talk is Cheap and felt the need to slam Mick and Brian in them. In a Q interview in 1988, he said of Brian "I don't think you will find anybody who liked Brian. Brian was not a likable guy. He had so many hang-ups, he was unreliable, he wanted to be a star. I admired his grit and determination....Listen I'm being honest, right, I could say, Oh yeah, Brian, lovely guy, but I'm being honest and he ha so many hang-ups. He didn't know where to hang himself so he drowned himself. I wasn't surprised when he died, not at all. There were extra hassles between Brian and I because I took his old lady. You know he enjoyed beating chicks up, not a likable guy. At the same time he had a likeable charm and we all tried to get on with him, then he'd shit on you. It sounds like I'm just putting him down but you ask anyone in the Stones and if they are honest they will say the same thing. So no, I wasn't surprised about Brian. I didn't wish him dead and there were a few guys who did, but in all honesty it was no surprise, he was out there and I really don't think he expected to live."
