Aftermath VS. Steel Wheels...

Great poll question, and a touch one! Two great albums, in my view.

Neither album is probably among the consensus of fans top 5 list, but both are great.

Choosing one is hard, because one does not wish to, or intend to, downgrade the other album in any way.

For me... it's Steel Wheels.

Why?

Well, it was perhaps the album that pushed me into the highest level of being a Stones fan. I think I was in my ate-teens when it came out. I already considered myself a fan, but after that it was through-the-roof and I have seldom gone a day without listening to the Stones since. It was also the album that prompted me to plumb their entire catalogue and listen to everything, not just a few big albums.

Also, Steel Wheels to me represents the point where the Stones "came back". I know they never retired, never broke up or went away. But there was a bit of inactivity and some tension in the mid eighties, and it felt like a comeback. The album is fresh, strong, rocking with good vocals by Mick. I love Mixed Emotions, and really there's not a bad song on the album. It wraps up with two gorgeous and wistful songs that I love - Almost Hear You Sigh and Slipping Away. Awesome album. Again, not a top 5 album, but nonetheless essential.
