RE: RE: Brian Jones book review for a--zon

I'll say this, it did deserve all three stars I gave it for addressing Keith's lies directly and rebuffing them without pulling punches. Of course any of the books I mentioned (including yours) will do that too, but some younger fans won't have or buy an older title. I love buying used out of print books, but some people don't seek them out. So in that respect a post "Life" Brian Jones book was needed. This fills the void and if you want to know about his life through 1962 it's absolutely the best place to go.

It's 1963-69 that's the problem and basically it's the authors focus on Brian's sex life, drug use, and emotinal problems, over the details of his career. I think a better defense of him can be made simply by discussing his music and making that the focus. The drugs we know enough about elsewhere, the sex we learn a lot of new things here, but for what reason? Other than mentioning significant relationships, or his children, it is done absolutely in the poorest taste possible.

I really did not need to know what Brian liked in bed. The author puts some twisted sick stuff in there, even though he says the source for the info (Nico) was prone to lie about that sort of thing. Finally making Brian as the living embodiment of the semi evil devlish figure of Pan is very silly tabloid crap that would have been scary to old maids in 1965. This also takes up way too much space. Again who can take that Satan stuff seriously when it comes to the Stones outside of idiots like Kenneth Anger or maybe David Dalton (who I think was joking).

Anyhow Keno it's both deeply disapointing, and sorely needed, at least for those who won't read some of the older better books. Kind of an odd mix of loved it and loathed it.
