but I was surprised to read your statement that 2nd hand smoke is more deadly to non-smokers than smokers.... How could that be ? The smoker is also getting everyone else's second smoke AND puffing directly , how is the smoker safer than the non smoker?
This is actually old news, from an old study done about 25 years ago (maybe longer). I would think other such studies have taken place since on this, and I don't recall the exact reason given why non-smokers are more at risk, however I do recall it had something to do with what a non-smoker breaths in verses what a smoker breathes in, or in other words, the dosage and the kind of smoke a person is subjected to.
The American Lung Association notes that second hand smoke (especially the smoke coming off the lite end of a cigarette) contains more carcinogens (cancer causing substances) than mainstream smoke (i.e. the smoke going directly into your lungs when you smoke tobacco, and nonsmokers never smoke tobacco) does. I recall that has something to do with it, as the nonsmoker is breathing in 100% second hand smoke all the time (along with those carcinogens), while the smoker is breathing in mainly the mainstream smoke (which has less carcinogens).
But again, this news came out years ago. I recall talking about this with my late, first wife in the early '90s, after my second marriage fell apart and I got back with her. She always hated having to go outside to smoke, and I noted this study to her and why her not smoking in front of me and the kids was an important thing. Sadly, smoking and lung cancer killed her 4 years ago (but not second hand smoke), but at least she never smoked in front of her family.
