RE: Stones tickets for just $1.75!

Such cool photos! Thanks for posting Keno.

Of course those prices look more than dirt cheap today but don't forget that everything else cost a lot less back then. Gerry Seda, who ran the Like a Rollin' Stone message board until her untimely death in 2010, once told us that in 1969, she had to pick between seeing the Stones or some other band (I don't remember which one it was) because they both cost about $5.00 or so and she couldn't afford to see both, despite having worked all summer.

So while $1.75 won't even come close to buying you a cappuccino in most restaurants today, it was undoubtedly a substantial amount of money for a young teenager (in those days, the majority of the Stones' audience were girls aged around 13-16.)

Also noticed how Brian in the poster is out in front of the others. We were talking here the other day about BJ being as popular as MJ back in the early days, and when it came to selling tickets, they put BJ out front in their photos knowing how more popular he was in those early days than even Mick.

This cannot be stressed enough. It is hard to realize today just how popular Brian was, because so much has been done in the decades since his death to wipe him out of Stones history. But the magazines from the era bear this out. 16, Rave, Teenbeat... all of them seem focused on Brian when it comes to the Stones. And their photos of other bands show at least one Brian clone in almost all of them.

In the early days, only Mick could rival Brian's popularity. Bill, Charlie and even Keith were simply not in the race.

If you have the entire collection of "Rolling Stones Monthlies" (only 30 of them were published, going from June 1964 to November 1966), you can see Keith gradually gaining importance in relation to Brian starting around mid-1965. This was simply ALO putting Keith more at the forefront and pushing Brian to the background rather than any shift in fan loyalty because Brian is still all over the other teen mags of the day. Not to mention his many clones in other bands.

But we all know how this one ended. And there is a cautionary tale in there for any artist who thinks that his/her work will live on forever after his/her death. History may treat you kindly but then again, it may not.
