RE: RE: My fave Floyd

Yes but at least the Floyd largely talk kindly about Syd. When he was there they were one of the best groups (and ironically fairly upbeat) and I love his solo work too. It was so experimental and fun, maybe some of the last real unselfconscious sixties music. I say that even though the second "Barrett" was recorded in 1970, it has the spirit of the sixties. In contrast a record like Let It Bleed is much more dark and heavy or "seventies" in feel though it was done in 1969.

For me the problem after Barrett left is that live the Floyd basically played they same sets over and over. In 1968-70 they would occasionally mix it up, but they just really had a very limited set and a lot of their coolest stuff was not done on stage.

Basically their "songs" were often ignored over their experimental sonic pieces. I mean I love albums like Obscured By Clouds, More, or Secrets, but so much (if not all) of the more melodic stuff was ignored. Of their first five singes only Axe was played on stage after 1968 and I think it became hideously boring unless the sound of Roger screaming repeatedly does it for you.

Don't get me wrong I like parts of the original Pompeii and the PBS special from 1970 a lot, but next to the 1967 footage with Syd or the initial 1968 stuff with David, I guess I miss the immediacy. Even the long jams of Interstellar work for me because Syd had a way of making them seem fresh each time. No two versions sound alike which is the problem with later Floyd. From 1972 on their set was basically identical each night. Good stuff but it gets boring when every show is the same.

I DO like all their stuff through the Wall just fine, but for it's THE Pink Floyd of 1965-68 that really is the band I get into. After their arty period, Dark Side is really good, but man the Wall and Animals (while enjoyable) are almost funny to me. I mean such angry stuff from the band that did Emily! The Final Cut and Roger's solo stuff is just too pissed off for me, no melody any more. David's Floyd is just dull "modern" rock. I don't hate David's solo LP from about ten years back though.
