With Exile, Universal made clearly audible changes. In particular, the backup singers were brought more to the fore, but you could hear very small things you couldn't notice before. Was it an improvement? I don't really care - it just kind of exists parallel to the Virgin releases for me. A masterpiece is a masterpiece, and the audio quality isn't decimated like so many remasters you could pick up. But those outtake and revised songs were very, very cool. Even better with the Some Girls release - so I applaud the overall effort.
As far as the other remasters go? They clearly didn't put as much effort into tinkering, and yes, boosted the volume. I honestly haven't picked up the new SF edition because I'm not as stoked about the added tracks. I honestly think these tracks were picked because Mick and the band just had other shit going on and didn't want to put the same amount of work in, but wanted to put something out anyway.
Those ABCKO reissues are absolutely superb. I wish their entire catalog would be elevated to that standard of care. The Beatles reissues were the only other albums that come closest to that level of attention.
