I'm gonna respond, briefly. First, since when does listening to only vinyl make you hip?? That is only one tiny part of many, many complicated factors that might go into one individual's hipness level. In fact, I bet a huge amount of people today would say that people who only do vinyl AND who listen to a lot of Rolling Stones are the definition of "UNhip."
Second, "a basic record next to a basic CD." I really do agree with you here in general in that I lean towards analog sound, but to compare vinyl vs. digital in this way just doesn't seem as simple as that to me across the board, at least for a huge amount of 60s and 70s works (and prior). It's about the mastering, and the sourcing, and how it was different for so many of them. I might be wrong here, but it seems like it would be more appropriate to strictly compare works of the last 10 years one-on-one to each other, where the recording/engineering/mastering/pressing factors are more uniform and controlled for, and where the product was specifically made for both vinyl and digital.
