Rarities 1971–2003/Autobiographical songs/VS/Fabs

And then there were only 2…. Yes, it's time for week 826 of our Stones poll and we are down to our last 2 albums to rate the front covers of. So this week’s question is: : Rate the artwork for the front cover of Rarities 1971-2003.

Rarities 1971–2003 is a compilation album by The Stones that was released in 2005 and features a selection of rare and obscure material recorded between 1971 and 2003. But as usual for this question, it don't matter what's inside, just what's on the cover. This one has yet another great photo of the band on its cover, and I love the photo myself, but only one problem with it perhaps, where is Bill and MT? If you are covering songs starting in 1971, then they should be on the cover too if you're going to show the band members, no? Now the photo that is there is of the 4 current Stones playing together, and back then anyway, it wasn’t possible to have a photo of both Ron and MT in the same shot, but that would mean to just show a different kind of photo, right? Well, maybe not, as one could argue that MT only shows up on 2 tracks on the record, so no need to show him perhaps?

But overall, what do you think of this cover? Click on: Stones Weekly Poll, to cast your vote!

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Singles Collection: The London Years . From looking at the overall finial votes, this cover is well liked, with the top choice being an “8”, with 32.5% of the vote.

To see the poll’s full final results, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 825 . Or you can also see how this album's cover stacked up against all of the other Stones album covers that we voted on in the past at this page: Ratings for the Stones Album Covers standings at the Stones Fans Picks Page 2..

Now let’s check out this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 468, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we will vote on a finial answer to this question: What is the best autobiographical rock song (Part 3 of 3) We have 20 songs to choose from in the voting this week, and I must say, we did a great job in picking out some great songs to rap this all up with!.

To vote in the finial part of this question, just click: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll, we ask this: 'Lookin' for a Love'(by The J. Geils Band) vs 'Another Saturday Night' (by Cat Stevens), which song is better?

We will go with the best known covers of these songs this week, since the cover versions are the ones that fall under classic rock, whereas their originals predate the genre.

Both of these 2 cover songs were about guys who were in great need of girlfriends and were searching everywhere for one but couldn’t find anyone.

"Lookin' for a Love" was written by J. W. Alexander and Zelda Samuels back in 1962 and was at first a hit for Bobby Womack and The Valentinos on Sam Cook's SAR record label. The J. Geils Band then covered the song on their second album, The Morning After in 1972, and it became their first big hit, making the top 40 chart and peaking at number thirty-nine.

"Another Saturday Night" was written and released in 1963 by Sam Cook and was a hit single for him at number 10 on the charts. Cat Stevens recorded it in 1974 and once again the song was a hit single, peaking at number 6 for the Cat’s cover.

For the videos in the voting booths, J. Geils plays the song live at Rockpalast 1979, and Stevens performs “Another Saturday Night” live on his Earth Tour from 1976. Just remember if you watch them, don’t rate the videos, only rate the song itself.

So which song out of the 2 will you vote for? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What is the best autobiographical rock song (Part 2 of 3) 12 songs made the final cut, they are: In My Life - The Beatles (Written by John Lennon) (14.6%); Creeque Alley - The Mamas & the Papas (Written by John & Michelle Phillips) (10.8%);Rip This Joint - The Rolling Stones (Written by Mick Jagger)(8.5%); Small Town - John Mellencamp (6.7%); Watching The Wheels - John Lennon (6.4%); Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple (written by Gillan, Blackmore, Glover, Lord, Paice) (6.2%); Piano Man - Billy Joel (6%), When We was Fab - George Harrison (6%); Green River - Creedence Clearwater Revival (Written by John Fogerty) (5.7%), The Load-Out - Jackson Browne (5.7%), Wind Up - Jethro Tull (written by Ian Anderson) (5.7%), Workin' For MCA - Lynyrd Skynyrd (Lyrics by Ronnie Van Zant) (5.7%).

To see where all of the other songs from this poll ended up, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 467.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'School's Out' (by the Alice Cooper Group) vs 'Another Brick in the Wall' (by Pink Floyd), which song about rebellious students is better? A nice turnout at the VS poll last week, as this subject matter fits the mood of many students around this time of year. But which song ended up on top? To find out, just go here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 467. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close up everything, as usual, with our Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 221, and we ask: What was John Lennon's most significant acoustic guitar part while playing in the Beatles? At first I was going to ask this question for solo Lennon only, and realized after I put the list together, that John didn't play too much acoustic guitar as a solo artist. But since I also planned to ask this question for his acoustic guitar work while in the Beatles, I put a list together for that too and gosh, what a difference, as John played a lot of acoustic guitar for the Fabs. So I decided to first run this question using the Beatle question first, and then sometime in the future I’ll run it again for John as a solo artist. Now with 54 songs to choose from, normally such a poll with so many choices would be a multi week question, but since this is just a poll asking about Lennon, I figure us Lennon/Beatle fans know him well enough and don't need more than one week to decide what song he played acoustic guitar best on.

To vote this week’s Beatles poll, use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Who was of the most overall value to the Beatles? Well that was an interesting question I guess, it did well in the voting anyway, and seeing Lennon talking the top pick for this didn’t really surprise me too much. To see the full order of who ended up where in the end, just click here: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 220. Or, you can check out the final results at the Beatles miscellaneous Poll Page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

I thank all of you who take part in the voting here each week in our 4 weekly polls! I hope all of you have a great week ahead!
