by any band or artist? in any era? in any context? be it bootleg, truly live, or with edits? period?
I think I might agree with DA that it probably is not possible to identify the best song ever recorded when it comes to the studio (although SFTD is a tempting) due to a multitude of factors and subjectivity, but what about "live?"
Should anyone be interested in this, the fact that so many live versions of the same song by the same artist exist may make it difficult to pinpoint the one single very best live offering EVER haha! But even so, for me, Crossroads '68, Midnight Rambler '73, Statesboro Blues '70, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues '66, Going to California '72, New Year's Day '83 (performed 32 years ago TODAY, I might add, at Red Rocks!), and Roll Over Beethoven (Stones circa '63 BBC) make my short list....
However, the one true single very best live song ever simply has to be "The End" by the Doors, Live at the Matrix Club, San Francisco, in early March of '67 (I forget the exact date).
