Columbus OH, May 30 2015 Part 1

I hadn’t decided if I was going to go to Pittsburgh, Buffalo or Columbus to catch The Stones this year. I was leaning towards Pittsburgh, because I’d probably know more people there, but then the Lucky Dips opened for Columbus, and I figured that for less than forty bucks, with Ticketbastard charges included, I had to take a chance (thanks to LYL for shooting me an email and letting me know!). I’m pretty sure that without adjusting for inflation, those tickets wound up being the same price as the 89 show. Where would the seats be? Who cares at that price?

It’s been a little cloudy and rainy throughout Ohio for a few days, and I just had a feeling that it would be overcast and dry for the show, and I was right. Things just line up okay for me when it comes to The Stones, and I figured they’d continue doing that. I was right. The weather was gorgeous. The drive down was easy, we went to a brewery for dinner and headed out to the show.

Man, traffic was gnarly when we got to the Lane Rd. exit, and I kind of knew it would be. We parked in a lot that I thought was closer than it actually was and luckily we found a Port A John because after the brewery and all the traffic, we both had to piss! That may have also been the longest line we waited in all night. We had to find the Will Call window for the Lucky Dips, and they told us to go to Gate 5. Well, we wasted some time there, and we wound up not being in the right place, and we had to go to Gate 24. I mention this only because the guys directly in front of us wound up with THIRD ROW seats. Mine were not that good, but for the price, we saved enough to pay for the whole trip. We were in a section behind the floor, a ways up but in the lower bowl. Good enough that I didn’t feel a need to push and shove for a self upgrade. When we went in there was a beer guy and we grabbed some immediately. The Wonderchick and I were really thirsty after the walk. The beer guys didn’t even need to really carry those things around. They got mobbed immediately and didn’t even have to carry the beers around. Must have been a real nice gig for them.

So let’s get to the show, eh? You know the setlist. Primarily warhorses, but if you’ve ever seen them in a stadium that holds over 100,000 for football games, you can’t expect a bunch of things like Shine a Light or Hey Crawdaddy. They need to keep the attention of the 99%, not the 1%. Lemme tell ya, from the opening video and first Keefchord’s of Jumpin’ Jack Flash to the fireworks wrapping up Satisfaction and every second in between, The Stones definitely had the crowd rocking. It was a big crowd, and looked like a pretty much full house and the people clapped, sang, NEVER bitched about people standing or dancing and made the audience participation parts louder than the band. Like Mick said, “Stadium of Champions.” It really is, and if you’ve seen an Ohio State football game on TV you can imagine how loud us Ohioans can be. It was really cool when they announced the “Audience Vote” song, and started Hang On Sloopy, which is actually the official state song and includes what the rest of the world probably thinks is about the dumbest cheer ever when we all stand up and spell “O-H-I-O” with our hands and voices. Mick even said, “I hear if I say something, I’ll get a response anywhere I go….so, “O-H!”

The crowd roared back “I-O!”

Because that’s how we do.
